Oh dear,my mum used to have one of those, back in the 80'a was a pile of sheite then, she also had a Hillman avenger, which I wrote off for her while she was away in holiday, before I had passed my test ::) She should have hidden the keys

My mum had an automatic Avenger in the early 80's, I used to borrow it to go to work, used to really shift.
-
My mate used to borrow his mum's allegro, obviously it was 70's poo-brown colour.
We called it the "Land Crab", it was kind of cool I suppose 8)

I hired one years ago, you know what one of the best cars I've driven.

We spotted one in Falmouth a couple of weeks ago... My late uncle Harry ("Knicker Sniffer") had an Allegro and upgraded.... to a white Lada... ;D

At least it was white......my parents got a bright orange one and in all fairness it lasted for Bl**** years, built like a tank and drove like one too! (pre power steering) :)

wasn't it the poor old allegro the top gear guys had it in for and got loads of complaints from the allegro association when they kept trashing them :D

If you squint the back of an Allegro looks like a Porsche 928. And it has a cool steering wheel. ;D

I served my time on allegro's

My brother had an elderly Allegro and he caught some car thieves trying to nick it by winching it out of his driveway onto a flat-bed trailer! Can you believe it?! A)Wanting to nick an Allegro!, and B) out of someone's (gated) drive, for heaven's sake. That's Essex for you! ;D
Good job I moved.

Tomsy maybe its the car thieves equivalent of the fat bird on a stag night Alan

The ';Land Crab' was more commonly associated with the Austin 1800 which looked like a larger version of the Maxi ;D The top gear car that took the stick and got all the complaints from the owners club was the Marina. The reason for many a BL car going 'missing' was they made great bangers for oval racing, hard as nails but of course would never start and the front suspension used to collapse :D The ladas were also renown for their toughness as was the Austin 'wedge' princess. I also had an Avenger which was great fun eventually I put twin 40 webber carbs on with ported head, used to go like a bullet. Later I took it all of and put it into a Talbot sunbeam which was straight swap. The sunbeam put up with much tinkering including a Fiat super mirofori 2L engine and eventually a 2.8 ford essex V6 from a Granada. The most fun I had with my clothes on.

I always remember my dads allegro when i was young,we went all over the country in it camping and stuff. I remenber us limping home in it on more than one occasional as well, always made it though.
