just hand em your business card and tell em youve taken over the window cleaning in the area , and you are gonna do em for a quid less than the other guy. you are guaranteed to get loads of work off the existing windys . i did this back in the 80s and picked up loads

i think barrys post must be a joke because thats one thing you dont do is undercut intentionaly .and you haven,t taken over the cleaning in the area you will look a fool if you say that cause in time their window cleaner will return thats when trouble starts ,just be honest with the custys and if you impress them then you will get the job,if their window cleaner is crap then he deserves to lose them ,good luck with door knocking &keep at it

HAVE A 1 LINER sales pitch ," want your windows cleaned guv" ,  and plough on for about 4 hours before quitting, dont go home at the 1 hour mark, you will regret it

Just be honest, polite, friendly and above all - be well presented.  One you pick up a few and prove yourself the recommendations will follow.

You should be able to drum up work on your own merits but it will take time to get a good round going. Avoid competing with others as an approach, it's not going to get you a good reputation and that's what you'll need. It will also upset other window cleaners and it pays to get on with them.

also if you see  the local window cleaner up a ladder just politely go over for a chat and nudge him accidently off his ladder and then offer to clean his customers while he s recovering from his broken leg!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

on a serious note do not go round undercutting window cleaners!you ll make enemies and you ll only get crappy customers.if they drop the other guy for a quid less theyll do it to you!!

canvass and just offer your price.dont even ask what the other guy charges!

i would advise you buying a small round to get you started and leaflet and canvass like mad for 6 months to get a wage you can live on then take it from there.
