i dont want 2 stand on anyones toes /patch. what is the etiquette here i am out off work and am going to start to build a round from scratch (mum said she will b first customer lol ) i will b door to door & leaflets in different areas. if there is a w/c already well established in the area am i out off order canvassing it anyway ? i will never try 2 undercut or poach ,if i knock & they dont have a window cleaner is this fair play? in short i want 2 know if its dog eat dog ?
i am new to forums and type slow so i apologise if any of my questions seem disjointed as i have a million questions i want answers to.
I am looking at this ladder on ebay

Patches dont exist any more ... knock & leaflet where you want to mate.

If a customer is happy with a service then they won't leave their current window cleaner, so just go out pick an area and canvass away. One thing I wouldn't do though is price low to get jobs as you will end up with a lot of rubbish work and rubbish customers.
I don't think areas exist anymore where there isn't a window cleaner, today within about 300 yards I passed 3 professional pole system vans and a trad window cleaner all doing the odd house.

Get a waterfed system rather then ladders to be safe !
If you think you cannot afford it then ask yourself how much you value your life ?
Leaflet drop en mass and you will get a good idea of the potential in the area.
-
try telling other window cleaners patch's don't exist
-
ive got some areas of work that are so compact that id consider them "my patch".150 houses virtually all right next to each other on one of my 5 rounds.they get canvassed around 4 -5 times a year.
ive never lost even one customer to a rival.the prices are pretty cheap but i still make a reasonable day rate.its really not worth another window cleaner cleaning the odd one or two as he would have to charge twice as much to make it pay!! ;) ;D ;D
also cleaning them for 18 years im part of the furniture on this estate!im tried and trusted and always clean frames and doors even on my £5 jobs!! ;D ;D
there is work out there but you have to be persistent!!
good luck!

the patch system is still live and kicking in my neck of the woods as i found out the other day when i had a nasty call of a wc who's 'patch' i was flyering so just be careful
-
Some windys are still living the dark ages. By that, I mean those who think they have a God-given right to monopolize an area.
It is usually someone who does a lousy job, has a big mouth and little other bits, and nothing to back it up other than threats. These creatures often intimidate their (unhappy) customers into putting up with them as 'they are the local window cleaner'.
Anyway, back to the 21st century, we live in a land where there is free enterprise.
Note to the above mentioned Neanderthals: This means that others have the right to look for work and pick up customers in the same vicinity that you operate, but who don't want you.
Best wishes to those who are starting up.

If we keep encouraging newbies to get out there and canvass our work, then sooner or later we will all be defending our shrinking rounds!!! Oh and by the way... KEEP OFF MY PATCH!!!!!! >:(
-
most wc will take a job of other wc, and not give 2 hoots, but as soon as you do it to them, there is hell to pay,
dont care what any one thinks, as you are in this to make money not friends

i have one of of these ladder very good, i only use it for bit and bobs as i am fully wfp, in my 15 years doing trad i would say the bottom foot of ladder which is 1mtr is very clumsy i dont think you would go very fast as it is quite a beast to carry in small spaces ,my advice would be look for a cheap one on ebay that is local to yourself, good luck
