Ive had these for years and never found out the cause. They came up again today. It was a set of patio doors and there were black marks on the carpet the length of the patio doors and spreading into the room for about 2-3 inches. Come to think of it I'm sure they've also occurred where theres a window to the floor. Could it be anything to do with the sun? They are also hard to get off and sometimes they wont budge. They look like soot marks is how i would describe them. Any ideas?

Filtration marks ???

How long have you been cleaning carpets Chris?

do a search for draught marks or filtration soil

2 to 3 inches , is a little unusual unless you mean that dark lines coming away from the skirting at right angles aprox. if this is the case its the carpet fitter puncturing the backing when using kickers , seen it loads of times ,
a little effort with ultrapak renovate usualy does the trick, I am about to try a new prochem product on some filtration marks will look forward to the results.

A spoon of citrus gel mixed with hot water in a spray bottle 500ml works well.
found that out a couple of years ago when i forgot to replace the empty bottle of ultapak ::)

Mark been carpet cleaning 14yrs. The knee kicker idea sounds feasible but I've only seen them where theres glass to the floor ie patio doors. I must take a photo next time.

Mike ! Yep thats what the marks look like. So now I know what caused them. So maybe I imagined they only occurred at patio doors ;D.
Wish they would come off as easy as they do Kensington :)
