You can easily get out of it if you are self-employed. Just call the number and they will tell you it is so. It would kill you financially.

I did jury service a few years ago and claimed expenses and loss of earnings. I was there for 10 days and it did put me behind, but I just informed customers and they were fine (me being an upstanding citizen and all). Commercial stuff I cleaned early morning or evenings.
There was one guy there who was a proffesional diver and he was on £350+ a day and they paid up no problems.

Tell them you can't do it.self employment etc and it will damage  your business.

My mate who is self employed asked to be discharged they said no it's not a valid reason.

He spent 2 weeks and you claim daily loss of earnings and travel.

Is it true that you can only get the expenses if you find the defendant guilty?

Over the period of many years I've done 2 jury services and also had 2 deferred on the basis that it would seriously affect my sole trader business.

I did jury service a couple of months ago (Coroners Court)

I was thinking I could claim full loss of earning..
The max they paid out was £67 loss of earning plus £4 meal Exp and travel Exp mileage or bus fare.

So I was on a bit of a loser, but I did enjoy it. Only lasted a day  :)

I managed to wriggle out of it some years ago as the compensation they were offering at the time was around a third of my daily take. Not much fun if it lasts for 2 weeks.

1 way out of it is if they insist you attend tell them ur going to find everyone guilty as they must be guilty to be there as the police NEVER EVER get it wrong ... sure they will bar you for ever  ;D
