Title: carpet vaccing
Post by: Anthony Rowan on June 03, 2011, 08:50:41 pm
I cleaned a real dirty carpet to day, it was full of debris after the plumbers and decorators had been on site. I had to give it a good vac which I dont normally do, I dont even have a hoover on my van but the lady who owned the house had a Dyson. Must say it made a big ifference to the clean and I found that the carpet cleaned easier and  i must say looked better than nornal at the end of the clean.

I will have to buy a Dyson now I think.

Does any body else find they get better results if they vac first?

Yes.
I know there are many who don't, each to their own but I prefere not to have to extract a mud pie if you don't pre vac.

I know where this topic will end up going so I'll save my thoughts on 'which vac' until later.

Only vacuum if it needs it myself which isn't evey job.

As for vacuum types - have a dyson at home, albeit an older one. A henry for general cleaning which lives in the house and a BS36 in my van.
What gets used the most in my own home, the sebo  >:(

Question:

why wouldnt you vac before a clean  ??? ??? ???

Answer: When it doesn't need it.

If running a vacuum cleaner round a carpet before extracting it makes a difference to the clean, you shouldn't be congratulating yourself on what a great vacuum cleaner you have, you should be worried that your extraction equipment is pants.

Oh yes, here we go! ;D

Even a Dyson is better than no vacuum at all. Did you ask her for some fairy liquid and a bucket as well. ;D

Seriously though, having a vac on board is essential, you never know what you will find when you turn up even if you have been round previously to quote and ask her to give is a going over before you arrive.

If you have a portable I think it makes a lot of sense to hoover, but I rarely need to with the TM, but sometimes it will speed up a job in certain situations so I do.

in an average room 30% of the carpet is under furniture which never gets walked on so why not just dry vac they areas then replace the furniture... no need to wet these areas.

we tell customers we will move all the furniture but some area only get vacced, not to cut corners but to do what we consider is the best job.

Lost count of the times over the years that custies have popped into a room to see how it's going and said "oh, it looks wonderful".........that's after vaccuming only ??? Have to bite lip sometimes as some places do warrant the comment" yeah, you aught to try using yours sometime yourself" ;D

Machinery and chemicals used  will vary from one carpet cleaner to another-  buts that's another story as Hammy Hamster ( Tales Rrom The Riverbank ) once said -  but this is how I work:
1 / Pre Vac
2 / Pre spray
3 / Clean
4 / De-odorise
5 / Groom
6 / Go home -watch Countdown

Number 6 is optional but 1 to 5 should be a must as a rule !

What about 3 Derek

3 doesn't make sense, the whole process is clean

heres mine

1, yes please misses jones, i'd love a coffee, 2 sugars, bit of milk and stirred to the left ;D
2, pre spray
3 agitate
4, brew and a ciggie
5, extraction rinse
6, customer inspection with a few jokes thrown in while there in awww of my work. ;D
6.5, optional, air movers to speed up drying. only if needed though.
7, home in time for countdown.

and look, more steps than most. ;D

In my opinion a Dyson is not robust enough to be moved from house to house and to be in and out of van

Made that mistake same money would get an industrial vac

Worse than that Ian what if the customer had a better model dyson than the one that you cart about ???

Here's my analogy to explain why you shouldn't use a Dyson.  ;D

Say you hired a wedding photographer and he had an entry level dslr and you had something more professional in your hands with a big ol zoom lense. Wouldn't you be a bit surprised, concerned?

Now a great photographer can get amazing results with even the most basic camera and novices buy expensive cameras in Jessops and produce rubbish results.

However, if they can relate to your kit as familiar, even if it does the job,  you lose some of the mystique and professionalism.

Agree with wynes post too.

Same with the dyson as they are easly broke if dropped n also expencive to get replacement parts too.

They may well have a better model/more modern model than the carpet cleaner, but do they ever use it properly?  No they don't!
Surprised to see one of our custies with top of the range sebo...... proudly announce's as we arrive, "we've pre-vac'd for you" thanks we say, take dyson in and pull out a whole full cylinder of dust and grime........... :)

Like any piece of kit it all comes down to how you look after it and how you use it.
My dyson is about 4 years old and still working fine because I look after it. It has pulled out enough dry debris and fluff from a carpet even after the customer has done it for us with the latest in sebo or that huge, metal, £2k's worth of vacuum cleaner.
Now down to the point of what the customer thinks: It's not what you've got it's how you use it and my results and customer comments speak for themselves  http://www.checkatrade.com/willclean/
Not bad for someone who doesn't actually rate the sebo.
Can I also add that if you turn up using the sort of vacuum cleaner they use, then it makes them feel good that they have a piece of kit that a professional uses. No need to take the 'look what I've got that you haven't stuff.'
