hi all.
this is a question for those of you who have sites how much would you or do you pay for hosting and maintanance of your sites
-
£9.95 per year, if you do your own web design and uploading (which is not too difficult).
-
the reason i ask is i am thinking of having a site created and the guy who desinged this site www.capitalcarpetcare.co.uk is willing to personalise this site to my company for free but is asking for £20 a month for maintainance/hosting.
is this a fair price?
what do you think of the site?
-
Site looks alright. It all depends on what you want your site to be and do. If you require it as a web based advertising medium then a basic site like this is ok. It gets the message across. If you are on Broadband you will find that you have tools for doing your own website. All you have to do is register a domain name which costs usually around 2.99 a month. If you have decent tools provided by your isp then designing a basic website is pretty easy.
If you require something on the next level you may have to spend a bit more money. One of the best ones I know of is www.swiftcleaning.com the interactive cost calculator is excellent and I think customers would really apreciate it. Wouldn't apply to anyone who quotes on site though.
-
the site to me looks fine and i feel i would be happy with a site like this, the thing that concerns me is when i do a search under yahoo or google i cant seem to find this site or when i do its very far down the list. i am worried if i let this guy host my site the same would apply to mine.

Red, the site is a good base of information, however, As John & I have said, DIY!! Microsoft Frontpage will do it for you as a basic package, you can even download that website and personalise it yourself (as long as there is no copyright issues).
I pay my ISP £9.95 per YEAR for them to give me 5 pop3 email accounts and I think 20Mb of webspace. They also give some tools so you can monitor traffic to your site, allow you to create and modify your own email accounts etc.
All it takes is a little creativity in designing a website!!
£20 a month therefore is a lot of money. He will personalise that site (30mins), upload it to the ISP (2mins) then wait for you to ask him for modifiactions... ok so he may send you stats on a monthly basis, whoopydoo!
As far as search engines are concerned, this is a different matter, this is something else you will have to pay for if you can't do it yourself. To get high on the search engines is an ongoing task, once you get there - you got to stay there!
My view, I don't sell though a website, yes I have a website that I can direct customers to for information if necessary, but unless your at least regional in your customer base then ask yourself is it worth the expense to try and promote your website as a sales tool. Information - Yes, design, upload and leave (with the occasional update) but as a sales tool, then I feel it would take a lot more than £20 per month.
Besides, you will learn much more by trying to do it yourself, the first attempt will look terrible but you will get better, especially if you do your research ;)
If you need anymore info then email me.

Red,
My site www.1st4carpetcleaning.com is template based so it's quite simple BUT it ranks No.1 on Google,Lycos,Ask Geeves etc if you search essex carpet cleaners , or any of the local surrounding areas.
I could design and host a similar site for you for £50 plus £20/ month to maintain and force it up the rankings.
The most brilliant site in the world isn't much good if nobody finds it.
It takes a few months to get up the rankings but I reckon to get £2,500 and growing per year from it , not bad for a cost of
around £250.
There can be no guarantees in reaching the top but I'll certainly get you on the front page.
My email is dougholloway@fsmail.net if anyone wants to go for it.
Cheers,
Doug
-
hi doug.
iv been on the computer all day and have just about finished building a site, i will post the adress on here in the next couple of days so you can check it out i would however be interested in you getting me to the top of the search engines as i have seen your site and it seems to allways come up within the top few listings. Mayby we could come to some sort of arrangment for your help or advice. by the way i dont know if you have checked my profile but i think its only fair to tell you im not a million miles away from you .
also a question.
when selecting a domain name will it help me to have the words carpet cleaning in it?
-
my website is now online please take a look and tell me what you think www.vipcarpetcleaningessex.comhttp://

hi neal.
i go and see all clients if i can some only want quotes over the phone but i find a very small percentage of these ever go on to have the work done.
your website looks very professional to me and the only thing i would suggest is mayby you could add a question and answer page.
i see from your pictures your using a extracta scrubba are these your own pictures? from looking at your website i would have thought you were a alltec man, or do you use there fast track system?
-
Hi
Pictures are robbed from others, still in the process of getting these done. I am going back on fast track in November though. Had to drop off The one in the summer for family reasons.
I didnt do q & a's because i want them to call and get my consumer guide.
Cheers
Neil

do you remember where you got the pictures with the scrubba at all, as thats what i use and i wanted some for my site.

The reason www.capitalcarpetcare.co.uk could not be found when doing a search for carpet cleaners in edinburgh, is basically just bad luck.
Googlebot (which indexs web-sites)does a deep crawl looking at web-sites once a month. On two of these occasions the server I was hosting the site on was down, the site dropped from page 2 to nowhere. It has been resubmitted and Im expecting it to be up there again soon. This could happen to anyone.
That's why the hosting costs £5 per week, there`s much more to it than playing around in frontpage.
Well done Doug in getting your site in number 1 position.
As for Mr Redcarpet. If you do not want to pay for my services please don`t steal my copy and an image. You couldn't even be bothered to change it slightly.
Remove pronto or you`ll find yourself in trouble.
Hope your carpet cleaning is better than your web-site design.
-
whats your problem rabby.
i dont see why you have to be so rude iv tried to help you by advertising your services on this site and others do you not see that as me doing you a favour!
the idea of this site is for people who like to help each other out if your not willing to share your ideas then i dont see the point of you being on here.
and surely me using some of your ideas is paying you a complement as if they where no good i wouldnt be using them would i.
you need to drop the attitude.
why would it bother you me using a image its not like were competing with each other you aint exactly local to me are you.
-
plus if you remember your offer was to set up a site for free and charge to host it, i was interested in your offer and was going to go ahead with it untill i used every search engine i could think of and still couldnt find you!
doug is offering the same service for the same price and his site is at the top of all the search engines so who do you think im gonna give my money to?
-
It`s good maners to ask first.
Maybe I was over the top. Im sure if you spent a lot of time working on your site and someone came along and took your work you would not be very happy.
Allways happy to share info on C/C.
Felt you were slaging my work.
I sent you 2 long emails explaining web-site optimization, and why the site had droped.
-
rab i half understand your point,
but the way i see it for me to take your work would mean you losing somthing and i dont see it that you have,
the way i see it iv used some of your ideas as i felt they were good ideas if i thought you would object i would have asked first but wouldnt have expected you to as i wouldnt care if you used mine id be happy to help, mayby if some1 local to me was using my ideas and i felt i could lose work out of it i wouldnt feel the same way.
and i remember well the e-mails you sent me you were very polite and helpfull at the time.
the reason i decided not to use your service was i was impressed with the site and would have been willing to pay you to desing a site for me, but as i say i didnt see the point in paying £20 a month unless i can be assured im going to have placement on the major search engines, and for watever reason you didnt provide me with that reasurance,
the image i used is not a personal image is it?
if it were of yourself or your work or van etc. maybey u would see it as a liberty me using it.
but its just a piece of equipment and i would have thought you got the image from your supplier, surely you didnt take the time to photograph all your equipment when its so redily available
-
hi i am new and thought id share our site with you all,
comments welcome

I built our site myself and I think it's fairly reasonable although it still needs some work.
My contribution here is about hosting. We use 'Plus Net' as our Broadband supplier and the deal we have with them allows us to host up to five domain names in the web space that they provide for us as part of the package (250 mb I think).
If you go to the links page on our web site there is a link to 'Plus Net' check them out.
