Hi,
Had my transit 3 years now and time for a change,
Thinking of getting one of the above, Do any of you owners out there know if they sorted the gearbox problems out?
think they may have had trouble pre 05 plate ??
Are they economical ? thinking of getting 09 plate cdi sport type maybe?
Any suggestions would be welcome.
p.s my other preferences are the Navara/ thunder / or warrior pick ups, with a snug/ hard top at the rear.
Thanks guys.

I've still got an 03 Trafic. It's had some problems - the biggest being that it needed a gearbox change at 40,000 miles. Luckily it was just inside the warranty period. The current gearbox has now done about 53,000 and so far, so good - though I'm not complacent about it. I hunted around and now know a place that would strip the gearbox and replace the faulty part of the box for £800 - £900 if it fails again. I would lose the use of the van for 2 - 3 days but that would probably be the case if I had the whole box replaced. Not great but better than £3k for a new box.
Apart from that the only items that probably didn't last as long as they should were the screen washer pump and the steering pump. Otherwise the only things that have needed replacing have been the things I would have expected for a workhorse that's now done nearly 94k miles (clutch at 75k).
I'm told that it usually all starts falling apart around 100k miles so we shall see. Hopefully I can get another three years (33k miles) out of it without things getting too expensive.

hi
we run a 53 plate vivaro had from new so approaching 8 years now, fantastic van.
i have the 2900 long wheel base so can carry 650 litres, three blokes, poles, reels doesnt even register the weight.
i wouldnt exactly say its economical but no van this size is! but it is acceptable for what it is.
have had no issues only just tyres and servicing.
cheers
john

If it does start falling apart, that glue from Gardiner's is pretty good.

Thats encouraging thanks :)

Thanks for your replies ;)

gaz i mean this 100%
spend as much as you can afford
if that means pre 05 on this van
then walk away , no change that RUN away
this time last year i spent 2.5k on a trafic 03
then spent over 6k on repairs m8 fact 03
trafic nearly bankrupted me take this advise m8 ;) ;) ;)
-
Sean, my Movano temp gauge doesn't move much at all so it may be a "feature" :)
-
fair enough
will have to look out for the smell of my engine burning followed quickly by plumes of blue smoke :)
-
Alright Gaz
Why not go for another Tranny? How reliable has yours been?
-
Thanks Gav, your advice will be taken . ;)
Hi Wrekin,
My transits been ok , hardly any problems at all really, its 06 plate , but old shape,
but its really poor on fuel , its 2.0 td.... and i carry 650 litres first thing .... and i get 20 mpg /.
And i fancy a change of van i think ;)
-
We have a amongst others a 2008 Peugeot Boxer MWB high roof, which is fast, economical - I think! and a bit different than the trannys etc
We bought it new and so far very few problems.
Great to drive loads of space, looking for another one any time now.
-
I bought a 2 year old Vivaro 2003 plate 22,000 on the clock,
new clutch about 80,000 miles New gear box about 90,000
EGR valve at 95,000
Since then another new clutch and gear box then under warrenty another new clutch and gear box
and 4 more EGR valves hoping the clutch and gear box last
I hear they have been improved on since 2006
Mine is 1.9 DR LWB and it has done 103.000 miles on an 03 plate

The Trafic/Vivaro/Primastar gearbox issue is usually about the gear selection cable. Where it enters under the box, there is insufficient protection from the water/salt spraying up from the road. This causes a bearing to corrode inside the box. I'm told that there was a modification around the 55 plate. I understand that the boxes were protected better against the water spray. Modification or not, it would be hard for me to trust these vans again. It was the most expensive and newest vehicle I had ever bought and the gearbox went when I had used it for less than 2,000 miles. Although I've done well over 50k miles in it now, I still don't trust it.
Also, when replacing the clutch, the slave cylinder should be replaced as well. Not doing this can cause problems.

Dont think I would buy one - I know the likes of VW Transporters and Toyota Hiace are more expensive to buy in the beginning but could save a lot of hassle and money in the future maybe thats the way to go?

Hiace may well be my next choice - depending on payload. I hope to squeeze 3 more (hopefully not too expensive) years out of the Trafic first.
-
yes i looked at brand new hiace lwb
very similar in looks to transporter
was like 199 per month + vat ;) ;)
-
