Title: Filthy water from mains
Post by: Londoner on May 19, 2011, 07:29:53 am
My water production has dropped quite a lot. Not really suprised because this time of year and with all the talk of shortages they often drop the pressure. However, I happened to look at my particle filter yesterday, its only been in there a few weeks, and it was clogged solid.

Changed it last night and the production is back up by quite a lot. I'll know by later today exactly how much better but its looking good. The pressure is a bit down as well.

I don't know wherethey are getting their water from these days but the filter came out the colour of raw clay and we are drinking that stuff.

Ordered some more filters last night off ebay. Good prices,  well known brand too

I wondered about this too Vince.  My sediment filter was very grey at a recent change.  It's normally only slightly off white.  My production increased about 25 - 30% once I had done it.

No not really I just did a search for water filters 5 micron and loads come up.

Footnote The water production was way up this morning when I looked at it

The new filter has been in for only 24 hours and already it is visibly discoloured. This water is seriously bad. I ordered three new filters yesterday. By the time they arrive I am going to be changing it again.

Two days in and the filter is brown with  dirt. At this rate its going to muck up my membranes. The filter stops anything bigger than 5 microns but anything smaller is still going through

Vince, just out of interest, what's the TDS of your mains water?

322 which has gone up , its normally around 265. I think its because they are taking water from bore holes. The colour on the filter is very light brown, obviously clay I would say.

Brown?  Mine went a much darker shade of grey than usual.
A few years ago the water was making the sediment filter brown.  Apparently, there was a lot more iron in the water than there should have been.  So I put an extra iron pre-filter on the front end.  After doing that, the sediment pre-filters looked clean when changed.  The iron pre-filter was much larger and much more expensive but I only changed it once a year.
However,  this may well not be your problem because this only occurred after a lot of persistent rainfall and some flooding - which presumably put more iron into the supply.
If there is a way of getting the mains water analyzed, it may be worthwhile putting another pre-filter on the front end.  Not necessarily iron though.  I was told at the time that there are a range of pre-filters available for various chemical filtering.  They may have to be specially ordered as it's not the sort of thing that most WFP suppliers would stock.
Just a quick question.  Has the location of your RO changed in recent months?

Clay?  I read this post after my previous posting.  Sounds pretty grim.  I do wonder what the dominant chemicals are in the clay around your way and if an appropriate extra pre-filter might help.

THis can happen when the clean or work on water pipes in the area to your water supply. It will churn up the muck in the pipes when they are disturbed.
