Title: I've just been canvassing...
Post by: Tom White on May 16, 2011, 06:08:15 pm
I knocked in one street where I have very compact work, maybe about 15 houses.  Some were out (I've kept a record of these; I had three refusals (where I gave a rough price and left a card anyway) and I picked up three £10 accounts.  They're semi's with easy access, 8 or 9 windows and two doors; so I'm pleased with that.

This canvassing lark works.  Most of my round was built with leaflets, word of mouth, and being in the right place at the right time, but I'd like another five-to-seven days worth of work per month; we're really smashing through the work we already have since we got the van mount.

All I say is, "Hello", give a big toothless grin, "Would you like a quote for your window cleaning?" and take it from there.  Easy peasy.

Thanks to all for the canvassing tips.

This place is where I have a lot of compact work, and I'm sure there's no other window cleaner there, or would want to work there since to gain access to some of the backs, you have to do it from the next street up; which isn't a problem for me, since I have a lot of compact work there too.

So my average in these two streets should be pretty good.  I'm going to keep on at it though; this was to get over my initial reservations; it's a long time since I've canvassed and then I only did it piecemeal when I knew I was onto a good thing.

I'm looking forward to doing some more.

Nice one!! I haven't knocked on doors for years, I did when I first started and had some amazing results!! Perhaps it's time for me to knock on a few more to make certain areas of my round a bit more compact!!  :)

I hope I get the canvassing bug; I really quite enjoyed it.  I liked the comment (I can't remember who posted it) about it being a numbers game and to be thankful for every "No thanks" you get because you're one knock closer to a "Yes".

I've got a fair bit of work till the end of the month, but after that I've got a quiet week, so will get stuck in properly then.

All i'd add to that is that Saturday morning is a great day to canvass as generally everyone is in. The people who you miss in the week. If i have an area/street i want to pick more work up in then i will ring and try and book them in for a Saturday clean to enable me to show my presence and do this, it has great results.
