Title: [POLL] What percentage waste from your RO?
Post by: Perfect Windows on May 15, 2011, 07:23:52 am
I'm interested to see what waste settings you guys all run on.  Mine differs over time but I have a good idea what my average is.  As part of the discussion, do you actually measure it or just guess?

No, I don't need to know it.

But I do want to know it.

And, have you paused to think that there might be a reason why I want to know it?

June at Gaps Water (and a lot of the internet) seem to suggest it should be 80% waste for a good membrane life.

However, I suspect that in a battle between cost of membranes and cost of water once I get a meter (in next 12 months) it'll be cheaper to keep buying membranes...

I think if you reject about 2 thirds waste and put it through a second RO then you would have a compromise between waste production and membrane life.

Hi Vin,

Why are you getting a meter in?  Don't you have to specifically ask to have one fitted?

Hi Vin,

Why are you getting a meter in?  Don't you have to specifically ask to have one fitted?

Southampton has been classified as being "under severe water stress" so they are allowed to fit them compulsorily.  Plus, we're going to be the first area in the country to pay extra in the summer - water will be 6% more in the summer than the winter.

Its effect on me should be trivial.  I use about 30L a house, which is about 16p at our current water price (allowing for waste when creating pure).  If I can avoid paying sewerage on it, it's 6p.  It'll be absorbed by the customers (the price, not the water).

I'll be paying that as part of a solution that generally drops consumption by about 10%, so I'm much less likely ever to be restricted from using water.  I approve entirely.  I don't see why water should be paid for in any way differently from Gas or Electricity.  Use more, pay more.
