Busy day today - sling battery in back of van put on crocodile clips - zzzz! Oh dear wrong way round but only on for a millisecond so put it right way round and red light green light working so drive to first job.
Zoom zoom round back up to 3rd floor dormer with SLX30 pressure built up from yesterday lets me clean the fanlight then dribble - nothing, nada, zilch.
Go back to van - light on pump controller (old, Williamson dial type) ok, check connections - nothing.
Bypass controller and work straight from pump and all working and have spent the day working off my hip-tap with no ill effects.
1) have I blown the controller?
2) shall I just work direct from the pump?
3) how long before the pump switch burns out without the controller?
4) should I put in a bypass loop or get a new controller and if so which one?

Forget the controller work without it u will be faster

Did that about 3 years ago - never replaced it! :-[
>Franky you are a true gent - but it runs fine without and I'll prolly get a new one next week unless someone here tells me a better solution.

Gold I just use straight from the pump, the pressure switch is £1.59 from maplins and I have a spare, it takes about 5 minutes to change, I did have a pump contoller then a bypass but I prefer this set up. and if you really want to protect the pump a relay can be fitted for a few quid, there is a diagram on petes site

Cool! What's a relay and how does it protect the pump?

Digital varistream ;)

The problem is not the Amperage flowing through the closed switch contacts, as the switch is designed to carry that load. It is the opening and closeing of the contacts that does the damage.
Every time the contacts open or close there is a spark across the contacts. The bigger the current (Amps), the bigger the spark, which causes pitting of the contact and heat. If the switch cycle time is in minutes this is fine (one cycle being from contacts closing to opening again), but if it is frequent the heat builds and the contacts can get badly burned and pitted to the point where they fail. The higher the frequency, the quicker the switch will fail.
By using a relay, instead of switching a large current up to 7 Amps, the switch is only switching a very small current of a few tenths of an amp to activate the relay. The relay contacts which are a lot heavier duty then switch the load.
copied this answer on how a relay works, this is the product code for the relay N02AW
