Hi I am new to carpet cleaning and I cleaned a light coloured carpet and on a stretch next to some patio doors size about 2ft x 4ft when I extracted over the carpet there was a strong smell of chemical aroma in the air. In my see through window on my wand the carpet was clean but I have had the lady phone me saying at this point on the carpet it has dried with a yellow stain? Has any one come across this problem and can any one suggest a remedy? I also used pro chem pre spray before extraction. jeff

Hi Jeff...
I suggest you use the "Search" option and type in your problem... I typed in "Off Gassing" which sounds like your problem and came up with this... http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=60391.0
My next option would have been "Yellow Staining"....
Believe me, that "Search" option has helped me and a lot of others in the past :)

From what I have read, I would ask if the customer has used a rubber backed rug at the patio doors... This could be the problem....
-
Hi Colin
Thanks for your help the carpet is not a rubber backed type and it has only shown up on the part in front of the patio doors. I have cleaned her other carpet in her other room and every thing was ok removed stains that was originally seen.
-
I think Colin was trying to establish if a rubber backed mat/rug is normally placed in the area where it has gone yellow. Sometimes there can be a chemical reaction when rugs are laid on top of carpets. :)
-
oooops sorry helen new to this lol No there is definitely not a rug being used to cover the entrance of the doorways
-
What was the backing, did you check? I'm a newbie too, but could it possibly be a jute backing bleeding through to the surface? If you used more water in this area it would explain the problem.
If this is the case, I believe your best option is to rinse with 2.5pH acid quite soon..
If this isn't the problem, then completely ignore me :)

Type of carpet? (fluffy is not an answer)
Age? (carpet not you)
Has it been cleaned before?
Are there any pets that might like using that area?
Is that window south facing?
What pre spray did you use? (name of solution)
What did you extract with? (name of solution)
Was there EVER a mat on that area?
Is the stain shape a rectangle?
-
Could possibly be sun bleaching,
could possibly be that you over pre sprayed and soaked the hessian backing which has caused browning, on a light coloured carpet may look yellowish.

Thanks guys for the info the two rooms i cleaned where both south west facing and I presprayed with prochem power burst then cleaned with chemspec formula 90. I cant get to the carpet untill monday night what would be the best solution.
Just to say that there was a strong chemical smell when cleaning and it is only at one of the patio doors and the stain mark according to my customer is about 2 x 4ft. If I have to rinse again what would be the best product.

I presprayed with prochem power burst then cleaned with chemspec formula 90.
Called us old fashioned in the way we do things, but if you used a strong alkaline as in power burst then you're going to need to do an acid rinse afterwards.
Still maintain though that there was a latex backed mat there at some point.
-
Did you spray more powerburst infront of patio doors ? If so i expect you just didn't rinse it out enough .When you go back on monday rinse it out with fibre and fabric rinse .

Chemical smell? Wool can give off some strange smells. Not always just lanolin. If it is a wool carpet I would get a good healthy dose of acidic rinse on it.

Powerburst pre spray
formula 90 to clean ??? ??? ???
I thought the powerburst aggitated, dwell to break up the soil.
why do you need formula 90.
Or am i missing somthing apoligies if i am

Formula 90 can be used as a prespray or rinse, although I'm sure the pH would be left a bit high for a lot of carpets?
-
I reckon its to do with the sun bleaching, many times i get a strong odour from cleaning infront of patio windows, not sure about the staining tho but quite often the fading caused by the sun looks worse initially after cleaning.
-
I have noticed before a acrid smell from sun bleached carpets by patio doors.
I fancy marks idea ie an old pet stain wicked up.
try and bonnet it with m/s or f/f

2' x 4' sounds like an off cut laid there originally. (off gassing)
no cure, check the shape of the mark.
or Browning (fugitive dye wicking). acid rinse will cure.
probably over enthusiastic pre-spraying.
The smell is sun cooked wool, in my subbing days sold loads
of deoderiser whenever this arose, if customer refused the sale
you would spray some solution by the patio doors, wait 5 min's
then call them in to clinch the sale.
