Title: hard water marks from w.f.p?
Post by: GB Window Cleaning on May 03, 2011, 09:34:58 pm
ok, so i gets a phone call this afternoon from a custy...

"im not happy that your pole thingy as left water marks again (this is not the first call ive had from her like this) ive even tries leaning out the windows and polishing them off myself but they wont polish out"

so i go round and go inside and upstaird to take a close look, she's right, they are hard water marks! i got my trad gear out and cleaned the glass and there still there on the glass  :-[

now ive got some hard water removing chemical if push comes to shove but how in the hell can my pure water (ive never used water over 12ppm and now only use 000 ppm) have left hard water marks  ???

my first thoughts were that they must have been there a while before i started cleaning her windows! they are only at the bottom of the glass about 6 inch up from the bottom!

has anyone else had problems with water staining from w.f.p? or a situation like this?

help!

I would say that they were already there, only tap water can leave hard water marks like that, even if your tds got up to 50, it might leave spots, but they would rub off by hand.

Leaking gutter above perhaps?
window box on sill that has been watered and splashed on to the glass? seems possible for 6 inches up the glass
can't be your water, not possible

rain water wont cause hard water marks otherwise all windows would be covered in spots

Sorry I'll expand.
Water dripping from the leaking or overflowing gutter, taking with it whatever has collected in the gutter, hits brickwork or whatever and lands on glass, water dries off leaving residue on glass. seen it loads of times.
Rain water can hit the side of a building and run down to the windows, taking whatever it feels like with it, again drying off and leaving residues.
Other thing to look out for, is there any climbing plants, trees etc that overhang this window? Could be leaf sap residue
 :)

Ive seen similar marks to this left from water running down the brickwork/render then bouncing off the sills to leave hard water marks on the bottom 6 inches or so, as well as the water wot runs between two top openers and down the middle of larger panes. I've noticed it off clay commons more than other bricks, as well as older pale render.
Apart from cleaning them trad with scale remover, I dont think you can prevent it.  :(
 Bu66er!

you need something like oilflo or something similar.the major window cleaning suppliers like  the windowclean centre etc sell chemicals specifically for these marks on glass.

i personally wouldnt bother unless the customer was going to pay me triple the price of the normal window clean.

Absolutely! These solutions or time involved don't come free :)
