Title: Hit and run on my van while parked up - big dent in van door.
Post by: Tom White on May 01, 2011, 04:00:01 pm
Some naughty people have crashed into my van and driven off while it was parked up outside of my house!

Wor Lass is spitting feathers right now!  ;D

Here's what the damage looks like.  The door still opens (though it's stiff to open and close):

What do you reckon I should do?  Phone the police?  Claim off my insurance?  Get a door from a scrappy and get a garage to put it on?

What du you guys reckon?

Oh, I've walked round the estate checking all the cars, but none have damage on them corresponding to this dent.

gutted mate, that would have well annoyed as well, same thing happened to me only it was the front bumper that was hit, someone reversed into it with a tow bar and then just drove off, so now I have a twisted bumper with a hole in it :'(

I honestly don't know how it works with insurance, police etc, why not phone the claims line and ask then take it from there

Tosh, have you had a word with the people opposite your house? Exactly the same thing happened to my car a couple of years ago, and it turn out to be the old git opposite when he was reversing out of his drive and "didnt see" my car  ::)

Deffinatley get the police involved.

Then go out knocking / make up some leaflets asking if people have seen anything. Also if you have shops near by ask if you can take a look at cctv. Maybe contact local garages to ask if they have had any motors in for repair with white marks on them (must have taken a fair hit to do that)

Personally i'd go down the scrappy route as it will affect your no claims

gutted,

i expect you have an excess on you insurance which is more than a second hand door, plus if you claim your insurance will go up next year.

i may know a guy who,ll have a door, i,ll text him now and see if he can help, i expect he,ll fit it for you aswell but it would mean a trip to sunny cinderford (at your own risk)

Last year I had a SWB Transit T280 and the same thing happened to me but the damage was slightly worse,I went to the local body shop and they quoted me £200.00 to fix it,I could have went to the local scrap yard and got a door from another van quite cheap but the colour could have been a different shade.
I think your best option is to get it done properly by a body shop as your van is quite smart looking and it's the image that counts in my opinion but saying that you could well get a door that matches the paintwork exactly as there is different shades of whites but I personally would get it done by a body shop but then again I'm a perfectionist :)

A month ago I got a 2nd hand door white door from the scrapyard for my dispatch. £50. Only 3 bolts to fit it. Very easy.

I had it happen to me last year, I had agreed to trade the car in against another, was going to complete the deal on the Friday, Thursday evening the car gets a right smack from behind ina car park.

£1600 worth of damage and no one to cough up for it, also lost the car I wanted due to the damage done to mine.

And yes, I'll go to Cinderford, though every time I'm there I can't help but think I'm on a weekend trip to Chernobyl!

That must've been gutting.

And thanks to the rest of you, too.  It's good to get some perspective on things; otherwise I start thinking there's some massive cosmic conspiracy against me or something.

It was good to meet you too, Franky.  Nice van BTW.  With it being just outside Bristol, and having "FRANKY BAD BOY WINDOW CLEANERS" emblazoned on the side, I knew it was you.  I wanted to ask for a look inside it, but was frightened you'd think me a right sad case.  ;D

(I met Franky today at a 10K road race that Wor Lass was running in; he finished behind her  ;D)

Anyway, keep up the running and one day you might beat Wor Lass; whose only little at 5' 1" tall!  ;)

Hi Tosh - sorry to hear this has happened - happened to my daughter's car last summer while it was parked outside her friend's house - I was more irritated than her - she just happily drives round with a dented wing.

It'll have been some little Chav thinking he's Jason Stratham from The Transporter, with no insurance and a belly full of lager tops.

Aye!  And it's a big wide junction I'm parked on; the driver must've been doing some speed to have lost control and hit me.

Still, no-one's hurt and the damage is confined to one door (not the side door AND drivers door); it could've been a lot worse.

And thankfully the firm who're sending me my sign writing are incompetent and even after three e-mails and a phone call still haven't sent me it; 'cos I'd've been a lot more cross had I just had the van sign written!

I've spoken to the neighbours and no-one has seen anything, and one of the 'dodgier' neighbours is going to find out who done it (though I'd prefer not to know to be honest).

No I wouldn't.  If I got smacked in the mush, at every occasion I did it, for letching at women wearing tight Lycra shorts, then I'd look like ruddy Trippy, mate.  And I wouldn't want to look like the Tripster, no way!  :'(

There's nowt wrong with a good letch!  ;D

Sorted:

Before

After

It cost £60 fitted, and I've got the old trim straightened out and received advice how best to fix it to the van.

A big thanks to RZ for pointing me in the right direction of a bloke he knows who sorted it out in about an hour; so we still had an excellent morning's work done.

On reflection I'm glad I didn't go mental about it!  ;D

I haven't got around to reporting it to the police; but I will tomorrow; promise!

I wouldn't bother tosh, you are £60 down but working and happy, take another day waiting for the police and you will be further down and not happy

I should be to report it over the phone to the local police station.  If not, they'll have to catch me after work.  I've been told it's important to report it, because the police target areas that statistically have more crime, so if crime isn't reported they don't know where best to deploy their resources.

I'm happy though.  When it happened I didn't think I'd see much change out of £300.

maybe so Tosh but as you have repaired the crime scene it will be totally pointless ;) they can't do anything apart from record the crime. or is that the point you are making? if so you should have done it when it happened.

ach never mind me I am just rambling on ;D do what you think is right ;)
