Hi, you may or may not know that we are going to start up a new window cleaning magazine for the UK market with input from our friends in the states (to give you a flavour as to how they do it over there).....
This magazine will be owned by its subscribers, a window cleaning magazine written by window cleaners for window cleaners. Totally independant; our reviews on products will say its rubbish, if it is rubbish and brillent if it is brillent. Reviews based on real field work and input from its subscribers and forums a like, not from the companies selling the products.
The magazine will be free of charge to all window cleaners and have in it, everything you will need to help your business become a success.
I wroet an article in Window Talk called ' What got you into window cleaning?'........ one of the sections in this new bi monthly (online) magazine will be about how we found ourselves in this industry.
We will pay £10.00 to the best one that we publish! You can email me on lburbidgehighshine@yahoo.com or fax my office on 0870 750 1971.
If you do not accept money, then we will be more than happy to donate it to a charity that you hold dear.
Remember this is a magazine for window cleaners by window cleaners. Its you mag! It is going to be a place you can trust.
In this topic on this forum if you want to put the types of things you would like to see in your magazine, that would be cool.... let me know what you want to see in this mag. You are all the editors of this and together we have power.
;D ;D ;D
-
Excelent stuff Lee, I look forward to the first issue, any idea when that might be?
-
Thank you Neil.
We are getting articles together, we want the bulk of the mag in advance and then leave space for current at the time stuff .... we have not got an offical start date yet, It will take a few months to get everything in place.
What would you like to see in it? its an evolving thing.......
-
That sounds really good, Lee, I'll look forward to it.
And if I could suggest, if you've not done so already, to try and have a chat with Philip Hanson who used to be editor for Profeshunal Window Cleaner Magazine. He works for Ionics/British Window Cleaning Academy, and is a helpful bloke. He could advise some of the pitfalls I guess.
I may sharpen my pencil and have a bash at that article too, but it'll include tales of drunken debauchery, women, fast cars, and rubber gloves; be warned! ;D
PS. How many words do you want the article in?
-
Learn to spell Lee before you publish it. You might be taken more seriously ::)

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so why don't we try to be positive till we've read the finished article?
Anyway, lots of famous writers couldn't spell for toffee. Ernest Hemingway, Jane Austin, and John Keats (who couldn't even spell 'purple' properly) all struggled with spooling!

No probs Tosh.... thats way cool.
If Philip wants to contact me thats cool.... there was a little critism over that mag by window cleaners as it turned from a mag to an Ionics brochure. Totally not the way we want to go.
;D

Thanks Ronnie, I admit that I am not a professional and that spelling mistakes is only human. I will not believe how serious this is actually has been taken.

Thank you. As you have rightly pointed out, my spelling (which can be fixed by any good spell check) is such a small part of the big idea.

Ok I will be positive. Lee, I think it is a not too well thought out idea. Magazines are old tat these days. Just look at all the window cleaning forums doing the rounds just now, this is where folk's get all the info and advice they need and more, a lot more, in real time with running commentary on loads of things window cleanery. The web is the future not mags. I think.

The mag is going to be the ultimate web experince..... its not to printed. All will be online.
-
Well that makes a big diff. Good idea then. Is it interactive like wat we is doing just now?
-
Thats the plan.......
Im hoping you read something and can instantly hyperlink to stuff, videos etc.....
-
Sound familiar though. Anyway, good luck with it all.
-
thank you. So you will be subscribing then.............
-
Great news..... first story in from another forum.
Remember this part of the magazine is about stories of what got you in to the industry.
We will donate his fee to his requested charity SANDS ( Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Charity )
-

Nice idea, but I sadly think it will fail, as Ionics mag did no survive, and yes I was a subscriber and paid, even paid for the last year and never got the mag at all that year. The reason most local paper are falling is because of lost advertising revenue, because the internet is so cost effective, adwords etc.
Save your money, and put it to better use
An honest opinion

I would have to dissagree with you idealrob. How can it fail ? its a free publication.... bet you read it atleast once !!
Lee has written for other magazines FOC because he wanted too. This is something Lee obviously enjoys, so it cant fail !!!

What have you got to loose idealrob...... you wont loose any money on subscription (as you appear to have with the Ionics mag) I too subscribed to that mag and never got any issues delivered) because its free. If it fails it fails. Personal I think it will not. I will be providing an unrivalled online service magazine.
It is what window cleaners have been waiting for and really want.
It isnt dependant on advertisers either. Many thanks for your input. I really do value eveything mentioned.
So you will subscribe then? .........
-
What will your online mag offer that for arguments sake, this very forum does not? I still wish you luck mate but it has already been done, and still is being done, just in another guise. What the hell do you think this forum is by any other name. Think about it. All the info and recomendations and trials are undertaken daily and posted right here (and other forum's) What you offer is nothing new or unique in any way.
-
There are alot of window cleaners who dont post, but just read !
How many people read newspapers and or watch the news ?
How many different magazines are there for say motorbikes / boy racers
-
Unless it has the ability to interact in real time, fuel arguments and has the technology for rapid replies, it will be seen as old time in this day and age. The modern day forum will take a bit of beating to be honest.
Think about it, what will it give us all that we do not already have?

In my opinion the only reason Ionics mag failed was because it was an ionics mag. It was blatantly a promotional mag for the company and wasnt an independent mag that gave an unbiased opinion of all suppliers and general w/c issues.
However.............the editor of the mag (Philip Hanson?) did a great job professionally putting it together although his content was dictated by the Ionics who paid his wages. He can't really be held accountable for its failure.

I will be giving you my connections I make....... it will be greater choice, it will be interesting. I dont want to take over the world........ its there if you want to read it, if you dont, thats cool.........
But this topis is not about what we are discussing right now............... send in your story of how you got started Ronnie and you might get £10.00 for it...... ;D

You are absolutley correct :)

There are a few people who don’t seem to think an online mag would work, and seem to think it’s the same as a forum.
I totally disagree, if a mag is done well it is a totally different experience from a forum.
I like online mags.
For those who have never tried them, don’t dismiss it till you have seen it.
Here is an example of one I use, ........

PS, Page 8-9, French fire fighters race. Maybe the trad guys could do something similar?? ;D

Great input Neil....... we have also been toying with the idea of buying that page flip software. This mag would look so cool on an ipad, with your coffee and some available reading time to check out stuff happening in the whole world of window cleaning....... from extreme window cleaning in Alaska to honest reviews on products forum members rant about.
All good stuff...... thing is buddy, I know that you can not please everyone. Only the Brits could be negative about an online magazine they have not yet read...... oh and is free lol ;D ;D ;D
-
Lee, it's window cleaning, bloody boring at the best of times. Karlos has been doing one for years.
http://robinson-solutions.blogspot.com/ (http://robinson-solutions.blogspot.com/) He does competitions and stuff, world stories, and reviews. Like I said, it's just not new mate.

I be leave ewe will knead two make shore yore spell chequer is eh good won.
-
I am sorry, did not realise its an online mag, thats why i was thinking it wouldnt work, yes I will subscribe,, and do agree with other posts about ionics being biased, but would still subscribe today if it was still going. I like the forthright way the ionics mag quoted about the use of ladders, and used to show the mag to many commercial customers and get lots of jobs.
Best of luck

What could you offer that this forum doesn't?
Also, no offense, but you seem a bit full of yourself. Not sure you're going to get much support with that attitude of yours.
Eg "less of your lip" lol Ronnie has as much right to comment as you or anyone else does.
If you don't lilke to hear other peoples opinions, then a forum is really the wrong place for you isnt it?

Yawn.
As I said this topic aint about me. If you want to send a letter of how you started up then that is fine. I might pay you a tenner for it.
As for attitude...... I think if you read the posts in full I have a right to defend myself and my ideas just as much as anyone has a right to be negative.
I cant help it if you feel I am full of myself...... window cleaning has made me a lot of money. Its a fact. You can not say that wc ing has not given you a good life, can you?
