Title: Digital Varistream
Post by: Spruce on April 22, 2011, 04:51:15 pm
Hi All
I was wondering if any of you have recently purchased a new digital Varistream please. The reason for asking is that I thought I had read somewhere that the lastest one had some new features, ie battery voltage and wondered if this was true. No mention is made of any addition features on the Williamson Pumps website though.
Thanks

Thanks for that. Read that somewhere but haven't found anything to confirm it. Thanks again.

Maybe you know how to use them properly?

I know that when mine work, they work lovely, but when they haven't worked properly, it's because I hadn't set the system up correctly.

Someone in another post mentioned it's worth putting in the effort to get them working properly, and my early/inexperienced feeling is that, that's good advice.

ie battery voltage

When connected, and the pump/varyflow is switched off, you can push the plus or minus button and 1 to 3 bars will light up; 3 bars = battery fully charged.  2 bars = battery not fully charged but okay to work with.  1 bar = battery low.

Hi Tosh,

I think you have a Variflow which is a different controller than the Varistream that we have always used.
Our new digital ones don't have the provision of an additional inbuilt charger circuit connected to your van battery, hence the reason for us having separate split charge relays on our vans.

According to Williamson Pumps who supply the Varistream and Shurflo pumps, the electronic pressure switch of the Varistream is already set up and so compatable for use with a 100psi Shurflo pump, so it is pretty easy to connect it up and use it without too much trouble.

I have a 2 operator setup on my van for the occassions my wife or son work with me, 1 pump and controller per operator,  and running them has never been an issue.

I once saw a setup with one controller, one pump and then split for 2 operators - don't know how long that setup would last as the pump was working flat out and cycling like made when only one brush was working.

Picture of Varistream controller I use attached.

I have have bought the new version with battery voltage indicator this flashes 'L' indicating low battery voltage, i phoned williamson pumps and the they said its a wiring fault or a low battery, the van its fitted to is a brand new trafic so battery should be fine i have even upgarded the wiring still flashes 'L', they said it may need a split charge system so have fitted it to our transit which has a factory fitted split charge system with new battery...still flashes 'L

all the other varistreams i have work fine and are a few years old, i think these new controllers are to sensitive so time to purchase elsewhere or just install a tap

Steve,

I think mine's the same as yours; I get that "L", but my battery is brand new, and I charge it every night, but the pump still works, so I ignore it!

I've used a digi varistream since they first came out (3 to 4 years ago I think?) I spent the time to fully understand how it works & set it up properly. I'll tell you now, 80% of users I come across haven't a clue! Mine works perfectly, day in ,day out, every day. Couldn't be without it! ;)

I have one about the same age, mine does play up at times, it's definitely temperature sensitive.
I think my problems stem from using too small a diameter pole hose, the Algarde hose is only 4mm I/D.
If it's cold first thing in the morning it's fine, but when the sun gets stronger I have to reduce the cut off pressure to stop the pump cycling.
