Title: What makes a great carpet cleaner?
Post by: cleanable on April 19, 2011, 05:43:50 pm
Plus anything else that you might mention.....

Well, if YOU do all that then good on you, if you don't you're short changing the customer, and that's why it is important to price the job up accordingly. £25 to clean a lounge carpet thoroughly? - no way!

That's the BIG difference between great decent carpet cleaner's and Joe average!!

Which catagory do YOU fall into?

"if you don't you're short changing the customer,"

That is a very bold statement...................

You failed to mention being insured, including treatment risk, or being trained!!!! I often get asked if I have had any training by prospective customers....

Do you always:

Carry all COSHH data sheets?
Where protective shoe covers?
Call your customers sir/madam? (Until they say, "Just call me Al")
Use Foil protectors?
Carry a certificate of insurance?
Go before you arrive ;) (Nothing worse than getting caught short)

My old boss has been doing carpet cleaning since 1984 and would probably agree with a lot of what you are saying Mr RD. But hiding behind a ridiculous name is a bit weird, surely your 24 years experience is something you should be proud of and your experience would be welcomed by us newbies. Don't be shy, come out, wherever you are.... :D

None of the above make a GREAT carpet cleaner , the above are standard .

What makes a great carpet cleaner is having some carpets to clean .

What makes a great carpet cleaner is the abilty to consistently be achieving high hourly rates via a strong sales and markeing programme and processes.

Very few achieve this .

I disagree, the majority is not standard practise at all. Most CC's go in, throw everything in the tank, splash it down, suck it up and away they go (well those who don't use twirly whirly muck spreaders - ouch!) Incidently, on that subject I know of 2 well known carpet manufaturers who are now saying that any warranty on  new carpet will be void if the person has their carpet 'cleaned' by rotary/bonnet method as they do not recommend it.

The CC's who do do the above take twice as long as others do and charge accordingly. My question is, are those who are not doing the job properly doing the real CC's damage?

well if you want to be silly go find a play ground

this is a place for honest up front people want to chew the cud after a days graft you taking the pi55 with a name like rug dr does not help your credibility

so just what where you trying to find out with your original question?

Well there's a bit of a contradiction because at least one manufacturer of the twirly whirly muck spreaders has wool safe accreditation.
And whilst on the subject of 'who to believe' I did a protector application job today on a carpet laid only hours earlier, because someone at Carpet Right told the customer they don't apply protector anymore. :o

Fitz2kleen, if your a 'tradesman' and u know all about the carpet cleaning industry then here's a test for you;

1) Name 2 types of carpets that are prone to schrinkage?
2) What is the most hard wearing carpet pile mixture/content available?
3) What causes a join to split?

Answer those questions and you get my respect, don't answer then keep cleaning those pots and pans!!   :o

A great carpet cleaner can turn up in a ricketty old van, with a battered machine, bad breath and a bad attitude and know exactly which of the remaining steps to carry out ( and more importantly which ones to leave out) to get the carpet clean. Great carpet cleaners can clean a carpet with the minimum of chemicals, the minimum agitation, the minimum abrasion and yet still produce the maximum possible clean.

Being the greatest is a journey, not a destination and the only people who think they've arrived at the destination are either fools, or the delusional.
I think the questioner may have done a great job for someone and then let his ego get the better of him to thinking he's probably the greatest and so to test that theory out posed his questions to see if anyone else measured up.
Anyone who knows anything about this business knows you're only as good as you're last job - fullstop!

this forum still amazes me as it's some reason one of the best cleaning forums in uk. the way people have treated carpetmasters is really terrible and it happens far too often. never seen it on any other forum (and i use so so so many) yet the owners just let it continue here. can't imagine what new readers must think of this place.

Quite surprised how many don't turbo dry, I get many a compliment when customers say how dry the carpet is and it eradicates any wicking problems and for what work is put into it working is a lift in the house and and a lift out and the drier does all the work.

Even if I were doing LM cleaning I would still use one what a brilliant marketing tool to guarantee dry carpets before you leave.

Well Mr rugdoctor aka instigator of a load of Boll*cks.
While you have been sitting on your fat arse I have had difficulty finding enough hours in the day to fulfill the influx of calls to book my services, While this is enjoyable for me as a workaholic i'm wondering what you are doing other than picking your nose thinking up your next idiotic questionaire.
As for labeling me a jack of all trades, which may I add is in itself a compliment as it shows my ability to diversify to my customers requirements.
I am,along with my partner, trained to a Certified standard which the insurance industry expect all technicians to achieve before they are contracted to deal with their claims.
I find some of your derogatory comments made to my partner rather a tad slappable and for someone who asks if CC's address there clients as SIR/MADAM Id step back before you dive head first into a verbal bashing with a total stranger.

Basically pull your neck in son as you seem to be out of touch.
[If I dont get back to reply for a few days its not me being rude, its due to a strange thing called bookings]] Do give the work side a go you might enjoy it

Regards Marc

I treat every carpet I clean as if it was my own.

That's because after the insurance company have had to replace it due to shrinkage, damage and pile burst I end up owning it anyway.

I see it for what it is, just one of those wind up merchants hiding behind his/her keyboard. Usually some 15 year old getting on a forum and winding people up. We used to do it by phoning people up from phone boxes back in the 80's... ;D

It's hard not to get wound up I admit, but I have bitten too many times...... I do wonder if this is they same guy that went on about cleaning restaurants with his RD in Glasgow some time ago.... Classic wind up that was ;D

Oh Christ, don't bring age in to it Colin, we'll never hear the end of it  ;D

Just see it as a bit of light banter, its far more interesting to read than "I cleaned this today", don't be so anal GCS I'm starting to think in 'real life' you might sound like Mr Bean.

I know what you mean Gary. I've found it very entertaining, although I feel wrong and dirty for not using my turbo dryer for anything other than sofa's..... :-[

But I do use my WRD on occasion, but there was no mention of it on the questionnaire.... ???

Err yeah that's because you were the one being anal.

I think the spelling of shrinkage is minor looking at the level of some of the grammar  :P. (but to point that out would make ME anal)

Dontcha love it when he bites  ;D
