Ive have been doing insurance quotes for my car as the renewal is due soon and the price has gone up nearly £200.
So that means that van insurance has gone up to, but what i did seen is that i van get can insurance for nearly £200 cheaper than i am currently paying by not having it modified with a tank bolted through the chasis.
So in the long run it could save me a fortune over the years if i take the bold out through the chassis that hold the tank in and use straps on the OEM tie downs.
I dont want anyone to post how dangerous it is and that its a stupid idea ect. But i just wondered how many of you guy actually have your tank installed this was or how many have it bolted through the chassis with a frame.
-
i now have a diy frame bolted through the chassis, but my last van had straps holding the tank. tbh the insurance werent no different ???

Mine is strapped in, have this morning taken it out for a clean out, it hasn't moved in over 3 years.
As far as the insurance is concerned, I tell them that no modifications have been made, which is true, do not offer up info if they do not ask.
-
Mine's strapped in & anchored to OEM points, no modifications, all above board. Been using this method for 7 years. OK, I've never crashed but I've had some very hard braking moments without any movement of the tank. However, it's a 400ltr flat tank & I've always butted it up to the bulkhead to eliminate any momentum in the event of a crash.
-
you chaps that use ratchet straps, do you have an upright or flat tank?
-
flat for me with straps
-
my 500 ltr tank is an upright, and as i said previously, it was strapped in to my old van for 3 yrs and never moved.
i didnt have a crash though ???

Funny you should bring this up Lee as I had an hell of a time trying to get Van insurance last week.
I posted this on a thread last week.
It's only a matter of time before ALL insurance company's ask the following question. ( many already do )
Q What trade are you ?
A Window Cleaner
Q.Do you carry a water tank?
A Yes
Q What size tank do you carry? (allowing upto 60% of the vans payload )
A 500ltr (1k payload )
Q Do you have a QUALIFIED ENGINEERS report on the fixing of the tank? (Evidence will be required)
A Yes
Ok we would love to RIP sorry insure you.
Like I said earlier in the thread 3 years ago I never got ask any of the above apart from what trade.
Here's something to think about.. When proceeding with an online quote they take it that you have read their assumptions. In them they state, if you knowingly withhold information to obtain a cheaper premium your policy will be void etc etc etc....
At the moment this is a bit of a grey area as you could always play the "I never new I had to tell you about the tank" card, because there isn't any law or enforcement.
But I would guess 1 or 2 years from now it will be Law or some legislation to enforce water tanks in vans to be fitted by Qualified Engineers.
So it's a question of make the most of it while you can. or even take the risk while you can.
I'm currently looking at getting my tank fitted or buying a System that has been crash tested, as I think this will be the next criteria they will be asking for.
Ronnie Paton commented he had heard some insurance companies didnt pay out on claims from people that didn't declare they had a tank in their van. true or not I think we are leaving to door wide open.
I'm also looking at bringing in an employee this being another reason to go for a more secure fitting. A tank squashing me and its my bad luck, but possibly taking the life of an employee is another thing.
No doubt this will probably turn into a slanging match as it is Saturday and after few beers tonight and a bad football result the mood will probably turn ugly ;D

how many straps do you use?
-
I use 2 straps over the tank (tank against bulkhead)
-
I declared my fitted tank when i insured my van and i was told it didn't make any difference as long as I didn't want it added to the insurance from a value point of view.
a fitted tank is not a modification according to them but I got them to make sure a note about it on my records.
