Title: BOX GUTTERS
Post by: Andrew44 on April 06, 2011, 10:11:54 am
How do you clean the guttering on wall side of a box gutter if its a long run and can't reach the middle part?

Also how do you clean the middle panes of the roof glass?  What position do you start from? Are they very difficult.

Cheers

It's tough to answer your questions without a more detailed description, Andrew, or some photos.  If you get something awkward in future, it may help if you take a photo of it and post it up with your question.

For your first question, I think you're talking about soffit cleaning; the plastic area that the drain pipe is attached to, and there's a window preventing you from placing your ladder in the area that you need to get access to.  Is this correct?

If so, a ladder stand-off (google for pictures) may help get access, but without seeing the job, it is difficult to advise.  I would strongly advise that if you cannot do it safely (and if it doesn't feel safe, it probably isn't), then don't do it.  Bouncing off someone's patio for a few quid isn't advisable.

And for your second question, are you talking about a conservatory roof clean?

There's various techniques you can use, and assuming you haven't got a WFP, you can either use conservatory roof ladders (which I've never used), or you can use a long pole that your applicator (your T bar scrubber) will fit onto and you could scrub the glass with that.  And then using the same pole, attempt to squeegy off the soap and dirt.  It takes a bit of practise, but you can achieve a passable result with this technique.

I hope that's been some help.  ;D

HI Tosh

Sorry for confusion.  I have a wfp but was wondering how to clean gutters on a con where the gutter  is on side by house.  The roof und down towards house and not up under top window.  I can't reach the middle part of the gutter so can't do with hand brush or remove dirt .  How do people clean these.

Same question as above but for roof part that slopes towards house.

Hope this explains it more?

I have a trad pole with an attachment that screws on, and I climb a ladder and drag the muck to me along the gutter.

for the windows again a ladder up one side and wfp the windows on the roof

Thanks Stu

When you say ladder do you mean standard 3 step ladder?  Thats all I was going to use.

to clean the glass/roof on a box gutter type conny i put my ladder stan off on my ladders and then position my ladders so the stand off is placed on the window/door frame just below the front/side gutter(depending where i have to reach). I have 2 or three rungs above the stand off to hold on to and so can reach over quite easily with my wfp. As for cleaning the gutters out, The ones i have done so far i have not been able to clean out as i could not reach safely enough.

Thanks chopsie

I think I'll take that approach with gutters.  I couldn't work out how to clean them safely - probably cos I can't.

Do you think my three step ladder will be ok for access and hight or will a stand off rung ladder be better?

From the ones i have done there would of been no chance of reaching with a 3 step stepladder. I needed to get high to be able to reach down onto the glass.

So when there's poor side access you clean the side panels from the front and are at a high point to clean from the top of the panel?
