Diesel pump on the 03 transit going kapputt on me on the motorway, cost me £850 for the pump and £200 for the tow :'(

I was in a simmilar situ as you, with all the work booked on, only advice I can offer is go and hire a van sharpish and transfer all your gear into it while the work is finished it will take the edge off the cost of the job and it's also tax deductable ;)

Then there's the gearbox problems, but that's another story alltogether...

Dazmond. A good quality cluch kit should cost no more than 80 to 100. Decent garage will charge 150.00 to 200 to fit it mate. Dont get ripped off.

Its true my clutch kit went last week had it fixed for £200 all in but that guy was cheap a good deal would be £300 all in tops.

I might have one in the brewing.  I started my 'new' van up this morning and it struggled to get going.  Once it goes it's fine, no problems, but I think the morning 'start up' may cause me problems.

Obviously the van must've already have been 'warmed up' before each test drive (I did two) I took it out for!  >:(

Any ideas anyone?

If its a diesel might just be that the glow plugs need changing.

Is it due a service? glow plugs?

I would give it a good blast out Tosh, take it up the road & thrash the nuts out of it in 3rd gear! ;)

Well the gearbox on my Trafic went at 39,000.  At the time the worst bit was that it was New Years Eve and I was miles from home in the middle of nowhere on the way to a music gig.  I did manage to bang it into gear eventually and get going in second.  The clutch went on it at 75,000 but that's not so unreasonable.  I'm surprised you didn't get any warning re the clutch on the way out.  I've replaced several clutches in different vehicles (I tend to keep vehicles a long time) and there has always been a gradual worsening of clutch slip so a fair bit of warning.

thanks guys i feel much better now....!!!! :( :( ;D ;D

is the thrust bearing included in a clutch kit?ive never had any clutch problems in any car/van before in 22 years of driving.

the clutch has been steadily getting worse over the last week.i had it booked in for a week on monday as i wanted to get some work done and out of the way first but yesterday i couldnt get it into gear after nipping to the bank!!

everytime i press the clutch down there is a loud squealing coming from underneath.is this the thrust bearing?thats what a guy told me who said he knows cars/vans well.

need new front brake pads and oil light keeps coming on even though theres enough oil in the engine so gonna get that done at the same time.

regards

youve had a long run if youve never had a clutch go before daz .    hopefully your oil-light will just be a dodgy oil pressure switch

good luck with your next van mate you deserve it.with downtime you must of felt like just getting a window cleaning cart and going back to fulltime trad!!

yeh bobby the mechanic said its probably just a dodgy oil pressure switch.it keeps flickering on and off.sometimes it stays on for a while then flickers again.

whats worse case scenario?could it be a faulty oil pump?and are these expensive to fix?

if i keep getting trouble might be worth hiring a van so i can keep working!

these things really cause a double whammy as cant get out to earn as well as repair bills! >:( >:(

when was a mechanic i saw the oil pump strainer blocked with crud on a few engines putting the light on . but   its rare, more usually its  that pressure switch 9 times out of 10

Dazmond , the squeal is def the clutch release bearing . you could just replace that , but as you need to strip out to replace that then i would go the whole hog and do the job lot mate , wont or shouldnt cost you any more in labour costs , if they give you different costings then tell them they are takin the pi55 !

I'm off to the garage with my 'new van' this morning because it has trouble starting in the mornings.  It's probably the glow plugs!  >:(

dave stop being a smug git!!my brother has bought loads of cars for a fair few grand and he s had some right "lemons".

ive never bought a car/van thats not been at least 10 years old.i usually spend a few hundred on repairs to keep them on the road and most have lasted 4 -5 years.

with the money you ve spent on your van and garage services i bet you ve still spent considerably more than me even taking into account work days lost!

it would be great to buy a brand new van for £160-£200 a month as i could easily afford that but i live in the real world and with my credit history i dont have that option! ;D ;D ;D

tosh better get them glow plugs(or battery) sorted before winter comes!if its struggling to start on a spring morning it sure wont on a freezing one!

August 2008

1997 Nissan Vanette 2.3D (with WFP equip)
First MOT needed welding, new break system and general service - cost £600
Second MOT more extensive welding needed and all suspension gone - scrapped for £170

July 2010

1999 Nissan Vanette 2.3D (swapped equipment over)
September - new water pump £170
First MOT due June - pre MOT check discovered welding and break pads/discs
Advisory for new cambelt so will go ahead with work

I hope it will last until at least MOT 2012, ideally I have budgeted for a new van in 2013 so if I am lucky it might last until then as only has 80,000 on the clock.

the light is prob coming on because there is no oil pressure, the engine wont last long without oil,

on one of my old astravans oil light kept coming on and i thought oh prob just a dodgy sensor, then as i was driving down the street the engine blew up,

good luck dazmond you sound pretty inept with car mechanics faulty oil pump? your a brave man driving round ignoring the no oil pressure warning light

if i was you i'd be saving up for a new van very quickly and checking the price of scrap metal up north

ive been driving around with the oil light coming on for over a month now so i think my engine would of seized by now if it was the oil pump!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sadly, the odds are that there was a poor earth connection to the bodywork.
The only problem I had with an old 51 plate 1.9d Citroen Relay was an earth problem and it created havoac with all the gauges. It was the earth cable from the battery to the engine on the engine side that had electrically corroded - alloy gearbox housing and steel earth strap bolt are not good bedfellows.
When I worked in a dealership, the number of faulty sender units (usually water related) tested and rejected as claims by the factory would have all been down to a poor earth. Unscrewing the sensor, cleaning the threads and putting it back would have solved the problem in most situations.

i had 4 weeks off over xmas due to weather below -10, first day back i had a power washing job that a custie was torturing me to do, got to the custies house and 3 parts on the power house had cracked or shattered over the cold spell, so off i goes to my local power washer repair guy, was charged handsomly for the parts,

was heading back in the main road toward town doing 60mph and a young lad 17years old comes out of a side road doin about 40mph, tbones me on my passengers side door, writes off the van i spend 4 weeks in hospital, and a further 4 weeks finding a new van/wfp system on the cheap, still payin off the bills from the debt it put me into, probably wont see compensation for another year as the young lad is contesting it...

on the bright side today was my first day being caught up with my work since before xmas

That sounds like a self-employed window cleaners nightmare, mate.  Have you got a family too?

If that happened to me at this very stage I'm at, it'd be house repossession time I think.

In 2007 I bought a 1988 Mk2 Fiesta van off ebay for the princely sum of £54. I drove it home (180+ miles) without any problems at all. The MOT ran out the following day.

When I checked it over, it needed practically nothing doing to it, so did what was needed and submitted it for its MOT. It passed.

I ran it for 3 years and had no real mechanical problems with it. The engine and box were brilliant. The bodywork was the only issue, as it needed welding each year for the MOT from then on (no surprises here).

Last year I gave it away to a young lad, as I had replaced it with a very clean and tidy later Fiesta van (1999) which gave plenty of problems at first (alternator, battery, clutch, gearbox etc), but now the gremlins are finally dead and all is now well.  :)

John.
