i thought it finished april 5th ???

It is 5th April :D
But what's all the talk of sending evidence to HMRC? ???
I don't send them anything, I just complete the Tax Return online and keep my accounts and receipts at home for future reference if required.
Or do you mean you are sending it to your accountant?

You can't do anything until you receive a self assesment form other than get everything ready to fill the form in.

Oh sorry for any confusion boys, all it is, is that I have got it together to have the tax return sent off and paid for just as soon as it is possible to do so. I don't usually do it, so as for specific dates I wouldnt have a clue. I have spent the last two days putting all the stuff into the comp, and will then hand it to the accountant for checking and sending off.
That is a bit of a novelty around here, usually Jan 30th is the done thing, but I need a new van this year, so I want to have the tax all up to date and paid before I go ahead.

well my accountant does it within 2 weeks of the year end

save yourself the grief in future, record your reciepts weekly and then store them in date order in envelopes e.g. jan, feb etc.
