That's how I did my WCW backpack, and put a clamp on the return hose to restict/adjust the flow.

surely by opening n closing the tap will control flow without the need for another clamp. When you say clamp what did you use?

Cut the tank hose and then fit the T piece, put the tap on the tank return to control the output at the brush, (just drill a hole in the top of the tank for the return.) I also have a tap on the brush.
Not a very good pic but you can see I fitted a Hozelock, besides its something to look at on a sat afternoon.

As Jeff said he uses a tap on the return to tank, I used a clamp from a water feature fountain which is like a vice and just squeezes the pipe as much as you want.  If you don't have some form of restrictor on the return pipe the water will take the easiest route and just circulate round the return and not up your pole.
Hope that makes sense!
I can take some photos if not.

Have you tried warming the hose and fitting it on the 8mm tails, I'm sure/think I've done it in the past

If your backpack is the same as Jeff's don't need to drill holes fo a return pipe as inside the black bottom section the tank has a moulding nipple just drill through it back into the tank and secure return pipe.
