Title: Been to the accountant today
Post by: Londoner on March 23, 2011, 08:19:06 pm
As it says, I went to the accountant today, all fine but thats my point really. The routine is I go in, give him my year end printout from George. He then types them into his computer and its job done.
So this time I said to him, I really need to talk to you about your fees. I don't  think I am getting value for money anymore. There are a couple of walk in tax centres opened up round here and they will do this for £120.

He buckled straight away, and has given me a discount. Not to £120 but he met me half way and thats worth having.

Just a tip for the rest of you, it doesn't hurt to ask

Cheers Vince. If you don't ask you don't get.

my accountant is 400 quid.

Mine was getting up to that, so I felt I had to say something, but now he's going to charge me £250 inc vat. They must be aware of these Tax Shops that are opening up. I have two near me each about a mile from where I live in opposite directions. So I literally drive past one or the other every day. A constant reminder.

If you go in with a carrier bag full of receipts and dump them on his desk that sort of price is justified. If you present him with all the information then how much is there for him to do?

I'll bet he is too. Both the "Walk in Tax centres" that have opened up by me are run by Indians and are competing directly against the local accountants are  by providing the same service at a lower price. Simple as that really, market forces. Its probably how the restaurants felt when the takaways started popping up. These places are almost like takeaways in one sense.

these walk in tax centres do they give advice regarding tax saving / allowances for vans etc or just fill in forms ?

Just fill in forms but there is an accountant you can talk to. However, i have found that accountants in general are not very forthcoming about such things. You would imagine they would be red hot but I have never been very inspired. Learned more off here
