Hi guys,
Has anyone added an extra silencer to their truckmount to reduce the noise? Just seems a little loud when working in quiet areas.
I know being loud gets you noticed, and I've only really had one complaint in the six years I've used it, but I just feel a silencer would improve things.
Any ideas?

The silencer you have may be shot. Some of them have wadding inside which becomes caked over time due to moisture and foam being pulled through.

One complaint in 6 years, is there really a problem to be solved?!!
Is it actually the exhaust? Or just the engine itself - is it an air-cooled engine? Water cooled run quieter....
p.s. adding any silencer to the exhaust system would compromise performance to some degree i think ???

TM come with an in built silencer, adding another one would add to back pressure on the engine and could cause problems.

Hi,
I have done it, I put it through the roof with a silencer in the middle.
It does make the t/m quieter because I am able to close the door.
I still have a small appature for solution hose and vac tubes.
Doesn't affect performance
Thanks
Graham

Its the blower which makes the most noise.

Thanks for the replies. I have a water cooled steamway 9100, I have read that some american owners have added silencers to make it a bit quieter.
To be honest I think it's me that wants it quieter, maybe my ears are getting more sensitve it my old age ::)
Where would you get replacement wadding from, if it is shot or is it a new exhaust?
Graham, doesn't your tm overheat with all the doors closed?
Shaun, Ducktape is good ;D

fit a truck silencer, some thing like this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SILENCER-SUITABLE-COMMERCIAL-VEHICLES-/310179139472?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CommercialVehicleParts_SM&hash=item48381e0f90
this is big enough not to create back pressure

Funny this subject has come up as I have my TM booked in next week for a silencer to be fitted. The exhaust manifold is badly cracked after welding a few times so I found a guy who manufactures stainless exhausts and it seemed a good idea to incorporate a silencer between manifold and diverter box.
Let you know how it sounds after!!
