Title: The vehicles we drive.
Post by: H S and Son on March 15, 2011, 02:50:33 pm
Does the type of vehicle a window-cleaner drive for work purposes have a direct effct on the type of work that is likely to come his way?

I guess it stands to reason a window cleaner who drives a family saloon car with ladders isnt likely to secure office block work which would need to be done with the latest WFP technology and is more likely to get his bread nad butter work from domestics.

However, is a guy who drives a wrapped transit type vehicle carrying 1,000 litres of water more likely to have commercials as his bread and butter work AS A DIRECT RESULT of having that kind of vehicle and setup.

And in the same light would someone who drives a mid-range van (Ford Connect/Vauxhall Combo) with mid-range sized kit more likely to be picking up mid-range-size work, such as minimal sized commercial (small offices, small warehose) and decent sized stand-alone domestics.

To me it seems for some reason that that is how it pans out. Or am I mistaken?

One of my best commercial custies is a Japanese motor manufacturer who I have had for 12 years. I obtained it when driving a D reg Volvo 240 estate.

Ditto a shipping company in 2001.

In 2002 while driving a J reg Honda Accord estate I got another of my best custies - a factory's offices.

However - on the "better" domestic front as in £20/£30 houses I reckon it is my uniform and sign written (only magnetic ones) little van which helps gets me the business.

when i have priced and got commercial work big or small nearly all have never seen my transport , i dont go for big commercial work because i am no good at tendering or writing a decent letter , most of my work has been gained through recommendation , work from a 4wd wfp with trolley and i do large office's and apartment blocks, and like gold i always wear a uniform with company logo

I think people change their vehicles with their needs.  I have a Jag estate that I'll be filling with a lawn mower, trad gear, wfp and a huge bag of tools  ;D

If the work picks up I'm sure I'll be looking for a van fairly soon, but it's the added costs and grief.  I only have the one off road parking place and the chavs round here would have the van open every night  :(

I drive a 1999 Fiesta 35D, my work is 99.9% domestic, plus a couple of sub post offices. I don't do commercial, and use on average 10 litres a day. Nothing over 30 feet either! All my gear fits in or on Henry's finest with room to spare, except for my change float (not enough room for £80 Daz)!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
