Good on you mate... I did 300 leaflets today just haven't got the balls to knock...
-
Yes you have, go on try knocking on 10 doors when you're dropping the leaflets and see what happens.
We always door knock and then leave a leaflet if they're not in.
Ian, that's a tremendous response, you always think that the big houses will already have a window cleaner when in reality they often don't. You've just added the best part of £1000 to your annual business in a couple of hours.
-
just out of interest how many windows do these houses average
-
Super result - just goes to show what you can get in a couple of hours !

No, don't say "Do you want a window cleaner?" It's a closed question and they will invariably come back with "NO" because they haven't a clue who you are.
Introduce yourself, tell them what you do, tell them the areas that you already clean in, tell them how long you have been going, tell them how you clean windows, tell them how often you come around, explain the process, do you wipe sills, etc?
Then finally if they are interested, ask them if you could give them a quote for cleaning their windows.
Do the quote, tell them verbally but alsow write the price on one of your cards or flyers and hand it to them.
Be ready to answer if they ask when will it be done, how can they pay, etc, take names, address, postcode and telephone number or even email address.

i know its a closed question but I just say ''Hi there ...... do you need a window cleaner'' .... then just take it from there
ive tried all the ''im a local window cleaner expanding my round in this area'' etc etc but now juse use the ''Do you need a window cleaner ?''
dress smart ... act confident and smile a lot ;D
-
I just show them a leaflet and say
Hi was wondering do you have a window cleaner in my logo'd uniform!
if they say no,i say "can i interest you in a free quote?"
if they say yes i then pass them the leaflet explaining how every door frame sill and window is cleaned everytime!
Give them a quote and then take there contact number and book them in!

I'll see if I can grow some and give it a go..

I agree to a degree but that is bordering on sales men patter that gets results with a high % of customers that really aren't ideal onto your round, same as using a canvasser really, yes an introduction and offer to quote and if a no then move on leaving a card, and if they say yes they tend to be long lasting customers that had not been pressurised into saying yes to get you off their door.
but it works for you so alls good ;)

Excellent post Ian Rochester. I go for a simpler version of what you suggested but it's very similar. The truth is it's much easier for the customer to make a decision if they, A) Know a little about who's standing at their door and get a good first impression, people like investing in people. B) get a minute or 2 to think about what you have just asked them and figure out if it's a viable option, not many people have window cleaning at the forefront of their minds and if they are asked to make a snap decision or feel under pressure to give an answer they will invariably say no. By talking a little more you give them time to think, the next stage being to ask if you could give them a quick quote, alot easier to agree to than a full on yes, then while you walk round their house they have even more time to get used to the idea, they also feel you are making a small investment on them by spending a few minutes quoting their house making it more likely for them to agree. TOP TIP: When actually telling them how much it will be, don't let their be a long pause while you see what they say etc, tell them the price as a part of other things they need to know such ways they can pay and how they pay if they are out, is there access etc. Act as tho they have already said yes almost. Then nail it by saying "I just need to take a few details from you" name, tel no, email etc and tell them when you wil next be cleaning their neighbours. Its rare people say no or I'l let you know once you've got that far.

That doesn't work for me, I prefer just to say on a chirpy voice 'hi there, just wondered if you wanted a window cleaner at all?' then as they pause I give a few details away, like price, my name etc, it's worked well for me. I feel if you ramble on people just think your a weirdo, and can't wait to get rid of you as you seem desperate! People where I love just want to know what your selling and FAST cos they wanna get back to there tv! But whatever works for you I suppose...
