Title: Hypermiling
Post by: prestige cleaners on March 09, 2011, 07:07:02 pm
anyone else changing the way they drive to conserve fuel?

a couple of tips (please add yours)

compact round
plot route day before to save on travelling further
remove roof rack and ladders
dont overfill your tank for the day
pump up tyres hard
stick to speed limits
empty van of needless stuff
clean van (apparently no dirt helps the aerodynamics?)
alloy wheels (less revolving weight) anyone know how much i would save here? seen a set with tyres for £299
only fill fuel tank up half full (save 40kgs)

How about making an effort to do 1 more house a day, either by starting earlier or ending later to cover the extra fuel costs?
I don't 'slip' home for lunch as often to save mileage, even although I mostly work within a 6 mile radius of home.
Most windies here seem to buy their lunch and a drink at a local take away. That must cost nearly a tank of fuel a month. Take a sandwich and bottle of water from home.
Removing ladders and roofrack will save fuel, but I would rather drive a little more gently to save fuel.

Trouble is that we can start to spend more time trying to save a couple of pennys when we could use that time better to earn more.

I always reset my mileage when I fill up, I only ever used to put in £30 at a time. Time before last fill up I got 174 miles from my £30 (was 220-230 a couple of months back), this time, with not carrying ladders unless necessary and then only 2 sections of my triple, I got 197 miles from it. I am now having to put in £35 a time, which really gets my goat!

So I now take ladders off if I know I am not going to need them, and I also tend to drive steadier and accelerate slower, I am also going to pump the tyres up a bit harder tomorrow morning.

It is imperative that I use as little fuel as possible, the costs could become a right pain in the arse very soon if you don't change your fuel wasting habits.

I only take the ladders I need for the day to work, drive like the proverbial old granny, slow down using engine for braking, always select the highest gear as soon as engine not labouring.

I filled up with diesel last week (£48). It did nearly 100 miles before the fuel gauge moved. Then again it is a Fiesta!

i find having all my work within an 8 mile area with over half of it very compact keeps my fuel consumption down.

i drive pretty sensibly esp when i have a van full of pure for the day!!

im not messing about taking ladders/roof racks off etc.they stay on all the time unless im taking it in the garage.never know when ill need them during the day.although i have some days where i dont use them at all.

even with collecting once or twice a week and the rise in fuel i dont use more than £15-£20 a week.

i usually take my own lunch and flask with me or call at the co op on the way to my days work.

You've admitted yourself that your prices are rock bottom
So you don't get undercut. So I very much doubt I'm overpriced
I just don't like wasting money.  Bad for business.
