Depends on how much you earn as to whether it's more advantageous to stay as sole trader or register as a limited company. My accountant reckons over 20k and its time to think about going ltd. I'm know expert tho and perhaps if you have one you should be asking your accountant

i waited till I hit the VAT threshold then went Ltd at the same time.

That was on the advice of my accountant.

If you're married, your wife ucrrently doesn't work and you're both involved in running the business, there may be a significant advantage to taking the same amount out of the business as two salaries - you get the benfit of two tax-free allowances.

Other NI benefits as well, but you really must talk to an accountant first before deciding.

if you put your wife as director if she doesnt work you can make alot out of tax savings

You take a wage that is below the limits for ni etc

And the rest as %dividends

You pay tax at 20 % corporation on the rest of companies profits
