I have a softener, but im not sure it does alot really, its to prolong the life of the RO.

What RO do you have?

I have one but don't use it,my water is hard at a tds of 250 ish,I was told by Pure Freedom to back flush after every fill with salt  crystals,I have a 500 litre RO system and it would cost me more on softening resin  than it would on a 4040 membrane in the long run so no it's not needed in my opinion,I would just replace the 4040 membrane after three or four years depending on use, would work out alot cheaper plus no faffing about with softening resin back flushing after every fill or so ........... SOD THAT! ;D

I use a water softner every night before I fill ( 10 mins )   it prolongs the life of the RO O also only do a backwash once a week 20mins      you only need to backwash once a week.

yes the tap water goes through the softner but through different pipes,   I connect the softner pipes and flush a container of salt granuals through ( 10 mins )     then I change pipes and fill

I also sometimes do a salt wash before I go out so the softner filter is in brine all day as again it prolongs the life of the softner.

I have an Ionics system so its a straight forward swap over with the hoses which are connected to the system.
