OK, this is only my third post on this site and I don't mean to offend anyone but why is it no one fills in there profile or uses thier real name?
I'll happily give advise or help to anyone, but how do I know that an anonimous poster is'nt one of my competitors.
Plus my mum told me not to talk to strangers ;D

Anyone else want to come out of the closet?

Just to take it a stage further perhaps we should all take a look at our profiles and just, maybe, add a few more details.
All makes for a friendly helpful site

talk about raking up old posts, this topic was started in 2003 :o :o but the sentiment is the same why don't people use thier real names? I know a number of knowledgeable people who don't reply to posts that are listed by people who use silly names
and I remember a guy in Driffield whose pump went, if I knew at the time he was from Driffield I could have lent him one but he called himself prick88 (or something as stupid) & didn't fill out his profile so I Didn't know he was 8 miles from me.
if you look at the most helpful and knowledgeable people on these sites, they usually use their real name
-
Hi Mike,
I'm Dave, based in Maidstone Kent.
Some are more helpful than others. That might be why I think they dont use there name. I used my company name for registration and I generally leave my own name at the end of each post.
Cheers
Dave

Have always used my full name, I agree that to offer and recieve good advice and tips at least you should be honest about your identity and area.
Im from Worcestershire.

I'm Colin Day but my nick name is "Happy" which I do like to be called.... I used to get called "Doris" when I first joined the Navy but 3 months in and the nick name changed to "Happy" which I have been called for 18 years.
Nick Names are good but there's nothing as embarrassing than ringing "Smudge" up for instance and his wife answers."Hi is erm, erm..... your husband in?" Because I don't know his real name :-[

It's not so much using your real name on the forum (although I agree with the points made), it is filling in your profile properly.
If someone is asking for advice and you have no idea where they are from, you might be a little wary of helping them in case they are 2 minutes down the road from you.
Some will say that you should not be afraid of a little competition and give help where it is needed and in some circumstances this is OK. However, there is a dfference between lending someone a blower because theirs has packed in and offering marketing advice to someone who will directly impact your business if successful.
I have a good relationship with a couple of guys round my way and have helped and been helped by them in the past but I wouldn't expect nor would I offer help or advice if it were going to make putting food on my table more difficult than it already is.
If you want your fellow forum posters to offer open and honest advice then be open and honest with them by letting them know who you are and where you are. Trust is hard to come by nowadays and is hard earned. This is just a small way to help you gain it from the people on this and any other forum.
There endeth the lesson according to me, chapter 4 verses 6-8.

I always use my real name even on ebay oh someone done a check on me (on this site) and found out where I once worked 185 pages worth must have bored him to tears. :(
