Title: Ladder Training
Post by: Andrew Willis on February 05, 2011, 08:30:11 am

Ladder Training
On average 12 people a year die at work falling from ladders and over 1200 suffer major injuries.
Ladders account for more than a quarter of all falls from height.

The Law
The Working at height Regulations Regulations 5 and 6(5)(b)
You must ensure that everyone involved in the work is competent (or, if being trained, is supervised by a competent person).
This includes involvement in organisation, planning, supervision, and the supply and maintenance of equipment.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (Regulation 5(1) also requires employers to check ladder are well maintained

Staff training
The IMPACT43 window cleaning ladder, theory, selection, inspection and safe use training course is specifically written for window cleaners and the window cleaning industry providing certification enabling them to safely use ladders and step-ladders and to carry out, and document, periodic statutory ladder inspections
I day course
Certification:  Certification is valid for 5 years

For those forum members that have been window cleaning for 50 years or more

Andrew what makes your course more specific for window cleaning ie what does it teach that other ladder training courses dont i ask this because your course is about £40 dearer than many other providers, if you can list specifically what your course covers i can then assess whether it is worth the extra money for my employees to attend

I recently sent two of our trainers on a HSS Ladder training course.

Cost £150 per candidate

So £25 pounds more expensive than ours

 http://www.hsstraining.com/the_ladder_association.shtml

The HSS course visit and need was part of their CPD Continual Professional Development.
Provides us an opportunity to assess others course content and delivery.
Which as it goes was shocking

To answer your point on why is ours specific

We use window cleaner’s ladders
Including A Frames
Within our theory part the whole training is specific to window cleaning
unlike other courses where the content is generic
Case law, prosecution and fatality examples are specific to window cleaning
Within hazards affecting the use of Ladders we give reference to ladder type and the possible causes of over reaching
Again the application references window cleaning working environments
During practical ladder use
We demonstrate safe ladder use a combination of tools and accessories
Applicator buckets and correct sequences etc

Basically the window cleaners can relate to our industry environment unlike many other course especially the HSS course we went on was really basic and generic.

The trainer also advised incorrectly a method of footing the ladder?

I am pretty sure both our next City and Guilds QCF level 2 and ladder training courses are full in Manchester

If you are interested in ladder training then call David in the office next week and based on numbers we may be able to slot a second date in the schedule

Sorry at present on ladder training up to Newcastle
We may be running the city and Guilds QCF Level 2 in Scotland
and on the basis you have your own equipment on site could include an extra day for ladder training

Would not be able to include the cut down ladders, really recommend you don't use these

Why on earth not?

Surely if you need to be 2 foot higher up this is the safest method practicably applicable, provided the short ladders are properly maintained?

I for one would be interested in both courses (ladder & WFP) but Newcastle and Leeds are quite a long way from us.

As a ladder user for many years yours are an interesting concept got to say have never come across this before, so there’s a first.

The issue would be stability, operative climbing to high but I cant really comment, as I have not used them?

The real issue is liabilities to you as an employer

HSE Guidance is clear in that you need to maintain three points of contact when climbing a ladder it also makes following reference

7   This refers to the type of work and its duration. As a guide, only use a ladder or stepladder:

On a ladder where you cannot maintain a handhold, other than for a brief period of time, other measures will be needed to prevent a fall or reduce the consequences of one.

I will get David in the office to check funding in Scotland for City and Guilds
This way we could build the courses around this activity and see if we can come up with a training module for you (part funded)

How many window cleaners have you got

Have you other companies that you know that could make a group of 20

Regards
Andy

It is an interesting point with the 3 points of contact, I would be interested to know how high would be considered 'working at height' as I said these are only ever used when you need to be 2 foot higher up if at all.

There are 10 of us in total. I am certain that I could easily round up another 10 local window cleaners. Would this get me a discount? Me doing your sales and all? ;)

Give me a phone on Tuesday if you want as I will be out on the glass tomorrow.

Thanks Andrew your course content does sound much better for our industry, to start with i would only be interested in myself and one other member of staff to attend the course to first assess its benefits so when the next course date is available in manchester please let me know, one other question andrew does not the city and guilds course level 2 for window cleaners not include ladder training it seems a bit bizzar that you can have a level 2 in window cleaning and yet not be ladder trained ???

It would be safer to use a window cleaners pointer ladder, perhaps an Unger pole or a kick stool? The cutdown ladders look like an accident waiting to happen. I would be interested in finding out what made you use them?
