been using them now 1 1/2 yrs as free banking, and been using their post office chq deposit system, you put your chqs in their sae envelopes and they get sent to their head office, well they have lost one of the envelopes but thankfully only £65 in it, and no way of tracing the 3 jobs theyre related too. sometimes we bank £200 in a single envelope! just to give you guys a heads up that they wont reimburse you if they go missing.

I bank in a similar way through the Post Office and I'm aware that cheques do get lost.
You need to keep a cheque register with the following headings:
Date (of cheque)
Cheque number
From (your customers name and 1st line of address)
Amount
And a total amount that you pay into the bank.
It takes a few minutes to do, but if you did this, then paid the cheques into the post office, then you would know which cheques were lost and you could ask your customers to give you another cheque.

We use Alliance & Leicester and pay our cheques in via envelope & Post Office. On the Paying in slip the part you keep we always list name of customer and amount for each cheque.
That way we always know who has paid and how much in case of query or lost cheques. We also add the cheque details to customers account on George.

Why don't you have the paying in book? Its called a supplementary listing cheques deposited book, which is a duplicate book. You list name of payer, cheque number, account number, sort code and the amount. Copy goes in the envelope and other stay's in the book. Then the post office stamp the commercial bank credit book to say how much cash and cheques you have payed in.
I would never just put cheques or money into any account without keeping a record.

bad book keeping has cost you 65 sheets. lesson learned.. simples xxx

As they are now part of santander you can go to one of their branches and pay them into one of the business manchines. I have the same system with Abbey but as they have all merged we now have 3 branches in the town that you can use.

I photocopy every cheque that goes in. 6 cheques per A4 sheet (3 each side) and I write the address or invoice number next to each cheque. At the top of the sheet I write the date deposited and the total amount.
That way there's no argument. You may not get re-imbursed from the bank but at least you can approach the customers to get a new cheque issued.

i also use them, what i do is go into the alliance and leicester(santander)and put my business cheques in the cash machine, they accept business cheques.i cant be bothered waisting time queing in post office and putting them in envelopes, anyway nobody wanted to give any to me.

I also use the po for lodging.
I always get a reciept for the envelope I lodge, does this help in any way.
I do copy the details of each cheque

That is a worry.
My Window database stores all cheque numbers, of every drop to the PO.
If I were you I'd be going chuffing mental!
Who would have thought that you can't trust your bank? ::)

When did this happen? I sent off 12 cheques on 4th dec to santader which never arrived. Didnt expect them to compensate me though but it is a real pain in the arse. Managed to get ten of them to give me another payment but one has vanished off the face of the earth, and the other gave me another cheque but its bounced which is really awkard as if the original one had arrived and been cashed there wouldnt have been a problem. Now this customer is looking at a £25 fee and still owes me. Not looking forward to seeing him. If any more mail goes missing. gonna have to look at "local branch" options. Hopefully a one off.

I also photocpy cheqiues a little trick i learned from Paul Coleman.
I have had envelopes go missing in the past and A and L procedure was actually very good , as i had the cheque numbers and amounts that went missing A & L apply directly to the bank account that the lost cheques were written from and take the money manually , job done , you dont have to contact the custy and you still get the cash albeit after a bit of a wait. Thumbs up to A & L IMO. I agrre the system via the post office is ropey but i save bundles of cash having a free account so all in all its definately worth it. ;)

im a bit lazy really, at the end of a working day i cant be bothered to spend more time filling in chq details, especially when you have 10 of them to do. will have to change now though. :(

Nor can I. That's why I scan them.
Much less hassle plus you have visual evidence if you need it rather than needing others to trust that you've entered the details correctly.

Cheques are from the dark ages. Its bad enough when cheques bounce but this is something you don't expect, poor service very poor. That's why i don't take cheques any more and the sooner they stop them altogether the better. Cash or card payments for me, no hassles, and with card payments available via your mobile at a great price then it makes sense to offer it.

Same here Tosh, it's a very handy back up system that's saved me loads of bother in the past.
