Why does everyone want a slow speed? is is because of what you have read on here? High speed is fine for carpets!
You can just as easily scorch a carpet using a slow speed ,by leaving it in one place spinning for too long.
-
Jason is quite correct, you can use higher speeds on carpets,
taking all the obvious precautions.
For carpets i find the heavier the better on contract carpets.

I want a low speed purely because I look like a div trying to control the high speed ones ;)

Oh that is fantastic - made me chuckle. A lot.
It amazes me - everyone wants a slow speed. For whatever reason and there always someone that replies High speed works just as well. Even though it true.
But on training course and when you generally go to a shop to purchase and they ask you what you want it for they 97% tell the customer slow speed. Especially if its carpets.
I too prefer slow speed.

Agree with Jason. I use a truvox 400rpm and never had a problem.
