After squeegeeing the window I use a microfibre cloth to go around the edges, is this what everyone else uses or is there a cloth that better suits ????
-
microfibre is good, or you could use scrim but not so many use it now
-
so carry on using microfibre is the norm nowadays eh, what is scrim and where would i find it ?
-
most window cleaning shops will sell them
-
imo, proper scrim is better for wiping the edges of the windows, but it can take a few washes to bed it in, microfiber is better on leaded and georgian windows.

The art of window cleaning is not to leave any marks/borders around the window ;)

I don't when I use my pole ;) but when tradding, I think it's impossible not to leave an edge that needs wiping

Learn to squeegee the right way and you won`t need a cloth!
I think it's impossible not to leave an edge that needs wiping
it`s not!it is very easy to do once you get your technique right!

As above!
-
i used to always wipe around edges until i saw a w/cleaner in blackpool not wiping edges, didnt think it would be alright - but is was, from then on, i tried it and now when doing by trad its very rare i need to wipe edges,
-
Thank you george! ;D
-
says it all a windy in blackpool, like any custy would dare complain to them anyway ;D
-
makes your cloths last longer ;D
-
Only time I notice I dont need to wipe is when I dont go edge to edge when wetting down the window, when i squeegee across the pane it invaribly leaves a soap mark for the first inch leaving a need to wipe every time, I'm using squeegee Off soap which does bubble up a little more than what I used to use which was Unger soap.
-
i use both microfibre and scrim.i find scrim ideal for detailing when its a very damp day.
microfibres are great on leaded but i wfp most of them these days.they are also ok for buffing up small openers when slightly damp.
the cheap towelling microfibres you get from pound shops are great used as sill cloths with the flatweave for detailing.
i think ill get some more soon.the pack of 10 large unger microfibres from windowcleaningwarehouse look good and value for money!! ;)
by the way i always have to do a little detailing!those that dont are not soaping up properly!you have to leave a 2 inch gap round the frame in order to just squeegee!! ;D ;D
-
Dazmond I will check out windowcleaningwarehouse for cloths thanks, are you saying NOT to wash the window edge to edge then ?
-

No you dont dazmond, look at the angle of the squeegee when you first start a window the leading edge! keep this angle all around the window and you will not have to detail,
This angle \ going down the right side and this angle / going down the left side simple ;)
-
There you go dazmond this is from peters site and how i learned to do it!

How do I clean windows without detailing
« on: January 22, 2004, 05:44:23 PM »
Question:
I waste a lot of time detailing windows after squeegeeing them, do I have to?
Answer:
No
Practice on a window, clean the window normally but do it very slowly, watch what is happening when you go across the top and down the sides, the marks that you are leaving behind are not there because of bad luck, they are there because something is happening to put them there. Sometimes you will find on a particular window you leave nothing behind, this is not good luck, it is because of certain rubber mouldings keep the end of the rubber on the glass. Now the times when you do leave something behind look very close and see why, the squeegee rubber is riding up on to the mouldings, this causes a gap between the glass and the squeegee rubber, which in turn leaves solution behind.
First off make sure you have a soft rubber, hard is no good it will leave marks down the sides. Probably the easiest way is to go across the top and down the sides at the proper angle, you want to go down the left side at this angle/ and down the right side at this angle\. Now see what is happening
Like I said it depends on the window, they are all different, if you can see, and understand what is causing the marks that you leave behind, then you are halfway there, it is just a case of perfecting your squeegee technique so that nothing is left behind.
Practise this technique and you will not have to detail takes time but you will get the hang of it! and you will soon be flying doing trad work!

Grade A Pre-Washed Scrims tend to be the softest and best, although even these perform better after a few uses / washes.
-
well been having a bit of a go at it today (not detailing) depends on the window edge, and how much solution you use if you use hardly any water/soap on window and miss the edge of glass by 1/2 to an inch then its possible, in summer when the sun is out you need to use more water/soap so would be alot more difficult, either way i would still want to check all around the edge to make sure iv not missed some so might aswell just give it a quick wipe anyway
-
I domt use a sqeegee or scim because I am amazing. Nananaaaa

Jackal it does not matter how much solution you use the end result is the same! and why miss 1/2 upto the edge you can go right up on the edge of the frame practise give it more time and it will all come to you, summer/winter it makes no difference!

What does he do in the meantime while he's practising Bob? Stay all day on the one window perfecting his technique?

Mike
I was taught to clean windows without detailing. This was way before I started up my own round (5 years ago)
So I think its fair to say others should learn the trad way properly first so save time.
Not to say every window is the same and even now, I still detail some but not many.
