Title: WTF!!!
Post by: derek west on February 01, 2011, 11:50:06 am
just took valves out of the pump on trucky to see if i can sort prob, loads of bits of metal in there, not goood.

just trying to get the last valve out but its behind the chemical pump so not easy, still no better with 5 cleaned so i'm hoping the last valve cleaned will sort it other wise i'm guessing the metal bits are the problem, not the fact there in the valves but more, where they came from. if anyone has an idea please call me, 07854690355, off to get a big spanner. or should i buy a sledge hammer ;D

Hi,

Why would they corrode to the level they have? When i first read this i thought you might just have filled from an old boiler that shed's iron filings...but like to title says..wtf.

Im thinking we need to move TM soon and would love to know what could avoid this pump corrosion prob.

I take it you haven't been extracting with nothing other than northern water.

Has it been leaking slightly Derek to corrode so bad?

its not corroded, the nut on the first conrod had worked itself loose then got the poo kicked out of it and caused the problems in the brass pump housing, see pickies.

on picture one your looking at the dome on the left of the 3, it looks lighter than the other 2 uneffected domes and on picture 2 you can see it from reverse so its the port hole on the right, thats where the bolt came off and got battered.

£550!

might be a bit late but if you can read the serial number you could try dual pumps for a repacement.

cheers mike but to be honest, hydramaster provide a good level of service, rang martin at least 8 times today for help and assistance. be wrong of me to use hydra for free help then go elsewhere for the parts. dreading the heat exchanger or blower going kaput. talking 1000's.

i think this is more down to just unlucky rather than wear and tear. the bolt worked loose and caused the damage, luckily while inspecting i found another loose bolt on the fly wheel. not looking forward to fitting an all new pump as i have to disengage the clutch or something to get the pump off, luckily i'll have martin to blag all day if i get stuck ;D

simon

if its one thing ive learnt since becoming a carpet cleaner  its the fact that cheaper isn't always better when it comes to providing a service, ive never once said hydramaster are cheap but they don't half look after you. just a shame there right on the other side of the world ;D

This can happen on pumps. It is just a nut on the end of a shaft after all. All nuts can work loose even if they are loctited in. No great job to pull the head off naw and again to check the tightness. They do get some hammer as do the other parts of truckmounts. Its worth putting half a day aside at least once a month and go over the whole machine tightening things up.
One point, if a joint is leaking, don't just tighten it as you are likely to make things worse. Loosen it then renew the thread tape, then re-tighten.

Go for it....."break a leg" as they say  ;D

Just a quick one! To stop it ever happening again, once the nuts are in place you could get someone to drill a tiny hole through the nut and bolt and use a split pin to secure it....

I would have suggested peening the nut and bolt, but this is no good for when the nut needs to be removed... :)

I take it that fell on deaf ears Derek. You could also consider the castellated nut set up... Here's an illustration to show you what I mean...

i'm not sure if you can change the nuts on the conrods col, there on the end of pistons and splashing about in water. anyhoo the new unit i got is sealed so i aint takin it apart, having enough probs trying to fathom out how to get the clutch thingy disengaged from the thingy its attached to.

i know, i should give an alternative word that ordinary folk understand, ive hit a brick wall again, can't get the grub screws of the fly wheel (?) thing. my allen keys too flimsy and looks like its gonna snap when i try to turn it, i'll have to buy some reinforced high tensile super strength ones. mare n half this job.

At least you can do it yourself. Your not having to take it in and pay £XXX.XX in labour.

Thats the killer as far as I am concerned.

When I first left school I was a mechanic in a  garage I have some tools just in case and I like to think I know my way around an engine, but when it looks difficult like that  its off to Altec I go.

Good luck with it. Rather you than me.

What's wrong with the old lass?
Or should I say, what are the symptoms the old gal's suffering with?

just a thought with the old pump but you could cut a new thread smaller than previous and fit and thin nut and washer to that, if the con roads has  bashed the crank really badly it may not be not worth ordering a replacement con rod , if it works and is just rattly take it off and save it as a get me out of the poo, pump

absolute mare today, couldn't remove a grub screw that was holding the clutch pate wheel thingy on, had to borrow the wifes dads tool shed, 2 hours later i got it off, great i thought, be done soon, then lost the lug of the drive shaft so had to prize the old one out, ha ha, yeah like that was gonna be easy, anyhoo, managed it and fitted all the pipes, just got to put it back on the machine and connect the chem pump then fire her up. all easier said than done,

its all quite simple to be honest, the only problem i found is not having the right tools for the job and for anything that may and did go wrong. hopefully all will be sorted tomorrow night for a job on sat and a massive week to follow.

big thank you to martin who was on the end of the phone answering all my queries, ya just can't fault hydramaster. top bunch of guys.
