Title: its official!!!
Post by: Mike Halliday on January 24, 2011, 06:56:55 pm
I've just seen it on the news I live in the poorest area of the Uk, it has the highest unemployment, the lowest average wage (which is £140 a week less than the national average) the crime figure are the worst of all of Britain.

2 years ago it was voted britain's 'crappest town'.  The local hospital came bottom of the performance leagues and 80% of the senior schools are in the bottom 10% of children achieving acceptable exam results.

it is without a doubt the worst place to live and run a business.

Hull is the biggest poohole  in the UK.

but guess who runs a successful profitable business charging above average prices and has a very rich clientele ;D ;D ;D

so I don't want anyone else moaning about the economy or saying..." people won't pay those prices around here"

no one lives in a poorer area than me :D :D

All the best

How much of your work actually comes from Hull Mike,
i remember you saying you only travel 3 miles ?

A report other week put our area Eden as one of lowest paid
think average here is 14.5k, however, we have one of the lowest
crime rates, unempoyment not too bad, and sky high house prices,
it dosnt add up some time.
Our council area is the lowet populated with only 22 people to a sq km  :o

Good point Mike. Blows out of the water the belief that the area you live is 'the problem'.

Whenever you hear yourself blaming your location, the weather, your van your competition etc. Remember this post and take responsibility for your current situation, only then can you start to do something to change it.

the thing is, mikes found out what works for him in that area, trouble is (and like many of us) we believe that that will work everywhere and thats simply not the case, mike said if he moved down south he would be a millionaire, and all though i'm not disputing that, he would probably have to change the way he markets his business.

just a point,

Jon thats a hard question to answer, i can't say i have seen a direct improvement from the wrap, its a small  part of my marketing strategy, i can say it has done what I intended. everybody knows it and remembers it.

I'm in the process of arranging my wedding and we are using local florist, venues etc i can honestly say when i say my name they immediately mention the van. but I also get complete stranger calling me Henry & talking to me in supermarkets because of my leaflet having a big photo of me.

its lots of little thing that make a constant improvement

damn!!! you've caught me out  ;) ;)

although I live less than a mile from Hull only 5% of my work is in Hull  having lived a big portion of my live in Hull I knew it was rough hard town which had more than its fair share of problems. so straight away when it came to my marketing I totally ignored it and looked where the money was, which was 5 miles north  and that where I now do all of my marketing.

I live in one of the wealthiest areas of the country , there is an american bank near me where the average earnings are 150k a year , over 3000 people work in thier offices,  lots of insurers  locally too , property is expensive ,there are thousands of million pound plus houses within 10 miles of me . It is no harder or easier to make money here than it was in Teesside , which always scores very near to Hull in these kinds of surveys and league tables. It is about drive, attitude and placing your marketing efforts and budget in the right place. That is what determines success in yor business.
There are homes within 10 miles of me that are every bit as poor as those in Hull, in some ways poorer as the rent/mortgage costs are higher here.

Just shows we have to set our stall out and just get on with it rather than listen to the news etc.

Its a good advert for the newbies what mike has posted too.

Here's something to ponder, when I worked as a C/C up in Cumbria, I questioned why we got more work in some parts of Cumbria than others.

We were based in Cockermouth but tended to do a lot more work in Maryport, 7 miles away. The house prices in our home town were far more expensive than in Maryport and it was suggested therefore that they had more disposable income than us Cockermothian snobs ;D

So going by that theory, we should all move to Hull :D

I spent a year working in Hull in 07 , and visited Beverley many times whilst I was a CD franchise , there are thousands of nice propertes and proffessional people there with disposable incomes. it is like any other northern city , with slum like areas full of pond life chavvy people who hardly know any better. I would say Hull might have a higher percentage of poor and social problems than other areas , but places like leeds , Manchester and Sheffield are bigger so in absolute numbers there are more rough areas .

I've never even been to Hull.... Surely it can't be as grim as Workington!

Hull is a dead beat rough town, full of skagheads and rough areas, and like i said it is officially the most deprived area in the Uk.

but like I have said many times when people use the excuse that they live in a deprived area so... "no one will pay high prices" it has a place called Priory Park West.

this is a retail village in hull for luxury cars, not RR or Maserati but BMW, Mercedes, Audi,  who is buying these cars? the hull area also has a Michelin starred restaurant, who eats here?

there are 3 chemdrys ( and there UK head office) within 5 miles of me they all have a £95 min charge and charge £160-£180 min for a suite

even in the biggest crapholes of the UK there are people with money,

I've been to both Colin, and yes they are very similar.
However niether as bad as Cleator Moor. :o

Had 2 nights out in Hull, ended up in a club that i think used to be a cinema,
out with a bunch of lads, one lad who never seemed to get a woman,
was getting chatted up by a few girls, he was grinning from ear to ear,
till someone told the place was half full of ladies on the game.   ;D
