Take the cheque a just say that there was a problem with the last cheque, don't say that it bounced he might not like it.

There may be a valid reason it's bounced, I've had it before, people who are loaded still go overdrawn, I I've always got my money.

They will know it's bounced, may be a simple oversight on there side, I've just been tactful when it's happened to me, usually find them very apologetic

Keep the cheque, you can represent it upto THREE times.

Phone the customer, explain what's happened; it's probably just an oversight on their part and ask them when it would be a good time to represent the cheque.

Or you could just wait till the end of the month, and represent it then; hopefully by then there will be funds in their account to cover it.  I once did this with a £50 cheque for someone who lived in a lovely converted school house.  Guess what, it bounced again.  He would've been charged £35 x 2 for the bounced cheques = £70 plus he paid me in cash £50 for the job I'd done.  Total cost = £120 for a £50 job.  ???

I think I cleaned his house once more after that and he sacked us!  ;D

I never say "bounced" in a situation like this.  I refer to it as "the bank returned the cheque".  All sorts of reasons it can happen - not just lack of funds.  I've never yet had a customer do it intentionally as far as I could tell.  I've even had it happen where a customer has changed banks and I've been a bit slow to bank the cheque.  When cash flow is OK, I can occasionally take a while to bank a batch of cheques.  The oldest ones in the batch can sometimes be two weeks old.

I send bounced chqs back to the customer along with a bill for any charges incurred.

I take it that your bank charge you if someone bounces a cheque on you?
Mine don't do that but I know many of them do.

Cheques are a pain, had this happen to me to many times that's why I don't take them anymore, electronic payments or cash now, the last person that did it stopped a cheque for £120 had no intention of paying. Cheques will phased out in a few years, about time

Why not get customers to pay direct debit or get them to pay by bacs, straight into bank no need to go to the bank then ! Regards Hotsteam  ::)

Had a rogue month in October with six bounced cheques, got all the money back plus charges to me, however one customer sent me another cheque which bounced again. In the end I gave her five working days to send the cash she owed me for two cleans plus charges incurred by registered post or the matter would go further.
I got the cash by registered post and later worked out that £16 worth of window cleaning had cost her £86 in settlement!
She even saved me the bother of dropping her by sending a text, could she cancel as she couldnt afford to have it done any more!
