Title: Interesting comment at van MOT
Post by: Londoner on January 21, 2011, 10:53:00 am
Took my van in for its first MOT this morning, it passed, no problems but the examiner make an interesting comment.
He said the holes for the high tensile bolts going through the chassis are technically a fail. The MOT rulebook (and he showed me) says no holes in structural parts. It doesn't say no rust holes it says no holes.

Anyway he passed it so what the heck but I thought the rest of you should be aware of it. I haven't heard of anyone ever having a problem.

That is dependent on the position of the holes.

It is only an issue if they are within 30cm of the suspension:

Quote
VEHICLE STRUCTURE

Body condition and security
• The vehicle body must not insecure or displaced so as to constitute a risk of loss of control of the vehicle when driven, or a danger to other road users.
• There must be no dangerous sharp edges or projections caused by corrosion or damage

Corrosion
A vehicle can fail with respect to corrosion for:
• Excessive corrosion in a 'prescribed area' - within 30 cms of certain components, e.g. brakes, steering, suspension, seat belt mountings etc.
• Excessive corrosion in a 'prescribed area', but which is likely to adversely affect the vehicle's brakes or steering.

Note
'Excessive corrosion' can mean a hole or a significantly weakened structure.

Im sure on most Vans this could be an issue, there would be very few points on the chassis that is not within 30cm of a component.

Luckily Landrover chassis have plenty of room and very few components!  ;D

You will probably be best with a spreader plate welded underneath or ontop, rather than bolting 500litre tanks etc to 1.5mm thick steel skins ::)

I am not surprised you are not supposed to drill through the chassis, Here is how I have done mine (http://i948.photobucket.com/albums/ad327/chopsie/van%20pics/2010_0321vanpics0218.jpg)[/img]

If they didn't fail it, the m.o.t centre could be trouble unless like you say,  HE WAS A DODGEY GEEZER, I don't think they would want to loose their m.o.t license for one person

theres a lot of Hitlers  in the m.o.t. trade . you can often spot one at a distance, wearing a warehouse coat rather than mechanics overalls . another sure sign is very clean hands as a Hitler wont do oil changes or any of the regular work in between the m.o.t "s.     i used to be a mechanic and came across no end of these types, generally hated by the lads as they failed cars on daft techicalities that could be awkward to sort such as the wrong colour screws holding on a number plate
