I was thinking today is it worth continuing to claim the 40p per mile, or go back to claiming the cost of the actual vehicle expenses?
Baring in mind that the 40p allowance has to cover tax, insurance, repairs, depreciation and fuel.
The 40p allowance has remained the same as when fuel was half the price.
Has anyone worked out the figures?

if you do collecting when you go shopping that classes as business, so for now claim all the miles you can.
but with the price of insurance and deisel you will be better off keeping reciepts.
i only do 7.5k miles a year at least and it works out im £40 better off (tax deductable spending) each month, and this doesnt include my tyres, bulbs and othe wear and tear. then i put my van lease through aswell

I claim at the 40p per mile rate. At the moment it still works in my favour, but I agree that the margin is decreasing fast!
Maybe the government will increase the allowance ...
... but then pigs might ... ;D

i claimed 5250:00 on the mileage this year
not sure what id of claimed based on adding up costs, but id imagine its less
its simpler accouting too as im lazy with reciepts, id easily lose fuel reciepts etc

im with the doctor on this.
i put down my fuel costs for the tax year, along with all others i can claim for.
if they want to look into it they can, i have the receipts.
simple as that

I think you can only change from one accounting system to another when you change your vehicle.
It's to stop you counting 40p/mile on a new vehicle and then when it starts getting old and needing repairs, swapping over to costs. You would have already been given an allowance for depreciation in the first accountng period.
So if your van is in good nick, doesnt use much fuel and you have a good no claims bonus on your insurance, then 40/mile saves lots of paperwork.
But if your insurance is high, the vans going to need a bit doing to it to get it through its MOT and it drinks fuel, then you would be better saving receipts.

Yes you decide how you are claiming (mileage or vehicle expenses) when you purchase the vehicle for business use.
You can only change the way you claim if you change the vehicle.

I was told at a business link course if you start 40 P a mile you have to stick with it until you buy another van.

i do about 16k per year so im far better off claiming 40p per mile (first 10,000) then 25p per mile rest of miles, claimed the other way in past years but when bought new van changed over. plus its easier as others have said with regards receipts etc. i use pay at pump at asda near home and it very rarely gives out receipts anyway.
surely people should get onto the government as with each fuel duty rise the 40p allowance should rise too? :-[

same here did 20 000 miles mixed work and own, but nearly all probably over 80 % is work so claimed 75%
