Title: Okay fellas, for those trying to lose weight...........
Post by: Matthew Bateman on January 13, 2011, 06:31:23 pm
I went to see a fitness trainer/dietician today because I need to lose 2 stone and havent felt the level of fitness Id like for a long long time.

Anyway, it was quite a revelation regarding how we are brainwashed into believing what is good for us and what is bad.

I had what was a thoroughly enlightening 90 minutes.

So far, and so far we have only started to scratch at the surface, I came away with a few lifestyle changes to start to implement and I was shocked with some of them.

They were:

Cut out all fruit.

Eat eggs to lower cholesterol.

Fat is okay in a diet if you want to lose weight.

Cut out caffeine altogether.

Have a fry-up for breakfast.

I thought that was all rather radical, but afer listening to some of his explanations I was inclined to agree with his thinking that we are hoodwinked/scammed/fed misinformation for the purposes of multi-national food companies,

We shall see how it goes, Im not on a diet, its a life-style change  ;D

Cut out all fruit?  Tomatoes can't be fattening?  Neither can pomegranates, and what's the odd tangerine going to do to you?

And of course fat in a diet is okay; it's not the fat, it's how much of the fat you're consuming.

I can't believe you can have a fry-up for breakfast everyday if that consists of red meat.  Red meat, containing saturated fats would surely raise your cholesterol level; and the calorific content must be huge.

I've had to diet for sports before to be under a certain weight, and I just cut down the amount of food I ate and exercised, and the weight always came off me.

You try having a fry up every day and meat meat meat...after a while you just feel like a big fatty meaty mess lol...you need a bit of fruit

Nothing mate.

If I choose to use the gym facilities they are free as well so long as my time spent there is under the tutelage of the guy I saw today. In the gym he designs some sort of workout programme for me. So in that regard he is a personal trainer, dietician etc.

For that its £30 an hour.

That is actually very good advice,

Fruit is full of sugar yes it is fructose but your body still deals with it in the same way as processed sugar - it ferments inside you gets stored as fat and is acidic to your system.

Saturated fat historically has been seen as the bad guy but new research actually says that is not as bad as we all have thought - example people dont eat animal fats but eat hydrogenated (trans) fats on a dailt basis without even realising it. (these are banned in scandinavia) - Pop out and get some lard. - seriously.

Caffeine is a terrible drug

Atkins is rubbish but also so are most carbohydrates , we eat far too much carbs and that is why we are all getting fatter and fatter , good carbs = most grains and vegetables.

All good advice that we should all adopt.

Now i am off to get a lager from the fridge. ;D

Yep havent eaten carbs for 10 years.  Might have half a slice of bread that will be about it.

They are high energy input that needs to be burnt off, maybe slow burning foods. Pasta a no no, rice, bread and potatoes they are far to heavy.

If your going to fill up on carbs you need to burn them off.

Its great to have porridge, but as long as you eat nowt from porridge time to maybe 2 in the afternoon.

Fish, chicken, vegetables, salad, stir fries.  Treat for myself is maybe chips once a week from the takeaway

Still got to drop 7lbs though!!!

But however if you are in a physical job you do need carbs, if your not go easy on them

(these are banned in scandinavia) - Pop out and get some lard. - seriously.

He did allude to something along those lines today.

Stating that obesity levels, despite lower levels of consumed animal fats, have risen, in parallel with increased cabohydrate consumption.

So the problem isnt fat, its carbohydrate, so far as obesity is concerned, but we have all been brainwashed to believe that traditionally the problem lies in the amount of fat we eat.

Matt thats been my theory for 10 years, carbs. If you cant burn them off then eat very little of them.  They are stodgy.  Yea cool one potatoe, but pile the rest of the plate with veg.

Fair enough...but mate, just do some research on the atkins website, follow that and find some workout programs. Join Gym if you must, £30 a month...dunna pay £30 a hour bud.

Follow atkins and you will loose itreally quick just try and vary the meals...it can get boring and repetitive.

Im not against it, its just hard.

ew right

I went from 12 stone to 8.5 - there was no way I could retain it, meant eating nothing, at all.

Admittedly yes im about 10.5 I dont mind saying this, but I want to lose 7lbs and its bloody hard, age factors into it also.

Body cant do it.  It kind of sets itself in its own environment, will never be thin, but constantly watch what I eat.

Thing is Matt I have tried dieting, they dont work.

I NEED! educating. I also NEED someone to help me, Ive recovered from various addictions in the past and couldnt have done them alone. Dieting is very lonesome in fact.

Ill gladly pay £30 an hour if I can lose 2 stone and be educated into the bargain, in a manner which I believe at the moment is contrary to much popular opinion. The thing is if we are mis-informed about managing our body image (the food we eat and what is good and what is bad) BUT use that mis-information we are never going to overcome the obstacles we need to to to become healthy.

Yep Daz

Carbs are a no no unless you can burn the buggers off.  Imagine a large plate of pasta, how you going to get rid of that?

Rice - large bowl of that - how are you going to burn that off?

Jacket potatoe, yea in theory it keeps you full, and your not going to snack?

Its down to no snacking at all.

Be full on carbs in the morning and it will see you through, everybody picks at stuff during the day

Matt, if you're snacking through the day eating sh!t I would recommend eating a bagal around 11. You will be amazed by the results. Granted it's like eating a breeze block but they are very filling. Regarding pasta and rice. You need to eat wholegrain , as the White stuff is full of crap, and don't forget , more than a handful is a panfull.

The big food companies invest millions and millions every year on advertising, "helping" us make choices when we go shopping. I used to see a physio about a back problem a few years ago and he insists that the cereal companies will be seen in the future, how we view tobbaco companies today. Unhealthy amounts of sugar to say the least.
The real fatties are literally starving themselves of nutrients by eating all the wrong stuff. That's why the eat so much.
When I was a kid {long time ago}, there was not one fat kid at primary school. Now look at them. We are just ten years behind the US. I remember seeing a news programme about the fat yanks and here we are right along side them. A few extra pounds is fine, but 20 stone plus is a big problem.

I'm sure i'd let some meat head at the gym advise me on lifestyle. He reads too many magazines and roids.I bet he's about twenty seven and in good shape.

When i was twenty seven i was in good shape too. In fact i was still in good shape gone forty.I am a fatty now and do need to diet and excercise.

The thing that stops me, and will probably stop you is time.Everyone joins a gym in january, it's a cliche. Most stop going by march.

The nearer the gym is to your home (the more convenient) the best chance you have. Human nature being what is you have probably picked a good gym, maybe a great gym, but i bet it's miles away.Partners aren't much help either- i'll come we can go three times a week together it will be great- They don't of course and if you do manage to look a little more svelt you get in the neck for that too.

Sorry everythings geared to your being a lard arse.

I have devised a diet, it is called the "CH" diet.

Do not eat anything that starts with CH, thats chocolate, chinese and chips, it seems to me anything that starts with ch is bad for you.

That info took me 6 minutes to devise, so on a pro rata rate, if you take my advise it will be £3 thank you.

Seriously, eat less, do more. simples!!

, deffinately dont give up fruit and veg

Not restricting veg Trevor, vegetables are fine.

I'll explain the fruit angle though.

If shops weren't around and we had to source our own food, where would we go to get some fruit. Where could I get an apple?

What about a pear?

Hows about another fruit, name one, any fruit.

If I wanted an apple today and wanted to eat 5 pieces of fruit a day, which is what 'they' recommend and I had to source it myself I couldnt. End of!

I could however get an apple if I lived perhaps in Kent at the end of the summer and into Autumn.

So whys that? Its because fruit is intended, according to nature, to be utilised as a source of energy in the form of sugar, to be consumed prior to the Winter with the intention of storing its energy to see hibernating animals through the winter IN THE FORM OF FAT!

Hmm, interesting!  ;)

Matt what he has said makes sense to me, indeed I have been told similar from fitness instructors in the Army many times as well as chefs, indeed when I think on it when an over weight young recruit enlists he is marched to breakfast every morning and is forced to eat a fry up and they all lose weight ;D except me I gained weight but I was a malnourished jock from an inner city that needed to gain weight.

Its all about eating the right type of food at the right time of day. Learn about the Glycemic index. This is the time taken for a carbohydrate to be broken down into is most simple form in the blood stream. All carbs have to be broken down into sugar or glucose in order for it be be utilised by the body. So a simple sugar such as a lolly or cola will be broken down fast and send your GI soaring. A more complex carb such as as rice pasta or spuds will take longer to be broken down and keep you fuller for longer. If you keep drinking soft drinks and eating sweets it will send you an a roller coaster as the insulin will kick in after the sugar rush to give you a low which will send you looking for more rubbish. The side effect of the insulin being cleaerd away is more cholesterol. Similarly eating a bowl of weetabix at night will give you a slow release, but where will the energy go at bed time. It will be converted to sugar and then stored as fat, on your hips by morning tim so the point is. Make logical choices no emotional ones and eat the right food at the right time of day. Fruit, any sugars and carbs are body fuel, if you dont have a strict training programme like running 60+ miles a week or cycling over a 100miles a week do not touch them........if you dont burn them off or use them up as body energy your body will store them as FAT.......resulting is much harder work to get rid of

pro cyclists consume over 8000 calories every day........mainly carbs

I'll explain the fruit angle though.

If shops weren't around and we had to source our own food, where would we go to get some fruit. Where could I get an apple?

Ah, is this is the Paleolithic diet, which to me sounds like another fad.

Paleolithic people rarely lived passed 30 years old according to the fossil records, which kinda undermines the diet!

Sounds to me that he has brain washed you lol. Matt my advice would be to buy a mountain bike and get out on a weekend. Fab type of exercise and the calories drop off also. ;)

I've got mountain bike, I go out every weekend.

NEXT!

Im in training for a sponsored cycle ride this year in India. I haven't been brain washed I don't think. Surely the proof will be if I lose weight.

I felt that what this guy was passionate about was quite a revelation for me and as I said he comes as a recommendation from a fitness trainer whose windows I used to do. The thread was intended as some sort of help or guidance for those that struggle with weight loss and keeping it off.

I used to be a skinny rake, now I'm 48 and overweight, I know all about DO MORE EAT LESS! it doesn't have 'miles' just like every other diet.

If I'm right to believe this guy it'll simply prove that the doubters on this thread are the gullible ones and are wrong to believe the hype from the food manufacturers.

Simples.

Matt. What the trainer has said to you is basically a low carb diet / lifestyle. Which is what Atkins is. You can eat carbs but you get them from veg ie broccoli. The principal is basically this:
your body has 2 ways of getting its energy. 1 is from carbs and the other is from stored fat. But it prefers to use carbs. If carbs are restricted for a couple of days the body will switch to burning fat for its fuel. And it does. Eventually more carbs can be introduced but never the rubbish food like white bread and white rice etc. or sugar. Well maybe now and again. But the idea is to look at nutrition. There is no nutritional value in 0lsugar. But throw sugar on a fire and what happens? Same happens in the body instant energy, and that's when insulin comes in to balance it out.
Have you noticed how many people are being diagnosed with diabetes? Mainly type 2,  unless its hereditary they are all overweight and eat to much sugar. If they followed the low carb lifestyle they could stop or reduce their tablets or injections. Dr atkins did this with some of his patients he talks about in his book.
same goes for high blood pressure and cholesterol all come down to healthy range.
It opened my eyes did atkins book much like the trainer did with you. Its all opposite to what we're told to believe.
Try telling the brainwashed low fat low calorie aspartame junkies. Were surrounded by fake foods i'm convinced it has something to do with the cancer rates.

Im just a window cleaner.

Stick to it matt and all the best for cycling in india

Matt, I'm sorry mate , but the guys taking crap. I'm a competative amateur cyclist and I eat all the so called sh!t that your guy is talking about , and the weight drops off if your cycling. A 2 hour ride can burn nearly a full days worth of calories. Sorry to sound patronising but if you are doing a charity cycle ride , the last thing you want to give up is carbs and fruit. I could talk all day about nutrition and training . Regards panorama.

If I'm right to believe this guy it'll simply prove that the doubters on this thread are the gullible ones and are wrong to believe the hype from the food manufacturers.

Listen in the 90s there was a fad that a lot of fat soldiers went through called cryogenics (I think that's what it was called).  It was a legal herbal tablet that you took if you were overweight, COMBINED with a 1200 calorie per day diet and weight training.

It was shown that the (expensive) tablets were useless, however the reduced calorie diet AND exercise worked.

Calories in less than calories used = weight loss.
Calories in more than calories used = fatty.

Now, you can dress this simple fact up anyway you want; palaeolithic diet, Alkaline diet, Cabbage Soup Diet; you name it, there's 1000s of 'em, but as long as calories in are less than calories used, you will lose weight.

And of course, your diet and exercise guru will make it sound more complicated than it actually is; it's in his financial interest to sound like he deserves his pay.

Tosh is 100% correct. Although the trainer may give you the encouragement you need, which may be worth £30 an hour.

@ tosh ive been saying this for eges too mate its simple maths at the end of the day regardless of what kind of food it is, if you eat less energy that you "put out" you mass will reduce = Weight loss! simples!

Disagree about the trainer been worth his money, it's all down to will power in the end . Save your money matt and go to your local supermarket and buy Health and Fitness for cyclists, it is a quarterly magazine and it's full of nutrition and training advice. It also has training programmes in from novice to competative cyclists. There is also a range of running magazines that you could also glean advice from.

Matt, I'm sorry mate , but the guys taking crap. I'm a competative amateur cyclist

Im sure you are and Im sure he isnt.

I also have more will will power than you, guaranteed (and I mean that) just that dont dispense excess fat for you.

The thing is no-one seems to have read the first post in the thread thoroughly yet everyone seems to be an opinionated font of knowledge on the subject of fat loss, probably because that is what TV advertising focuses on, that is what magazine articles focus on, that is what food packaging focuses on and that is what the majority of NHS food management campaigns focus on. When they start focusing on diabetes everyone on here will suddenly become an expert on that despite still being a window clenaer for a job.

I ALSO said in the first post we have only just started to scratch the surface. Yet youve all made your minds up, its crap the guys a crank. Would you still be in business if you were crap?

I was really rather surprised this morning when I came on here to find the amount of postings since last night.

Now maybe it is the Atkins diet, Im not clued up on that, so those that have suggested it could well be right, but does that matter? Is there something wrong with the Atkins diet that is different to any other diet.

To me it opened my eyes. Sorry to dissapoint those that wish me to remain ignorant. I thought you had to cut out fat to lose weight, apparently not, if thats the case isnt that a good thing, a diet where you can have fry ups? Well doesnt that make them them all the more attractive? It would seem to the sceptics not!

And as for Tosh and his ramblings our inhouse religious fruitcake to hindu loser, well, he is now a dietician too. God help us, but what he has just said there doesnt add up because he has conveniently forgotten metabolic rate and how that changes when calorific intake lowers. AND how metabolic rate changes as we age. Dont compare me to a soldier, my metabolic rate is entirely different to someone half my age!

What about the 'survey', we can all refer to surveys, where rabbits were fed eggs in Russia in the 1940's? They all died from high levels of cholesterol. The conclusion being, eggs kill you.

Tosh you just like to dispel what others think or are doing by finding something/anything, on Google, that confounds what they say. You are just a party-pooper, looking for an angle.

Thats all well and good, but rabbits arent meant to eat eggs, they can'tprocess them, never have been able to; they eat grass, so its not surprising they died from them. Essentially wrong conclusion which has stayed with us ever since.

And of course any one that we pay for their services we like to think knows what they are talking about, but that deoesnt by definition mean that they dont.

I said in an earlier post that I thought it was useful to post this as it could help someone, Im only trying to get fitter to be able to do a sponsored bike ride for a good cause (a cancer charity).

And in that light if you havent got anything constructive to say feck-off.  ;D

matt i do alot of mountain biking mate, and dont eat the healthiest of diets although im working on it, and i like my beer too, but i can guarantee you 10000% that if you start rocking the miles on the bike, on road or off , you WILL lose weight, and its low impact not like running which hammers your body, i am just starting back training on my bike for a off road coast to coast ride in august, 210 miles accross lakes, dales, and north york moors, will have climbed the equivalent height of everest after 5-6 days :) and i will lose some serious weight, its easily burning 6000 + calories a day

so get on the bike !!

also you do have to eat well obviously but dont cut out carbs for bike riding you will feel ill!!! your body NEEDS carbs for biking, before and after

i train with one long ride, 30 miles off road or double or more on road, one interval training session ie an hour doinghill repeats and one medium ride, ie 2 hours at a pretty good pace , plus i play football twice a week to cross train, and weight falls off :)

what ride you doing ??

Matt, you can do all the ad hominen attacks on me that you like but I've had to lose weight on numerous occasions for sports.  When I started boxing I weighed in as almost a heavyweight but had to get down to light middleweight.  It was the same for judo.  I know how to lose weight.

Just over the course of last year I reduced my weight (after gaining loads rapidly after stopping drinking and shot gunning Mars Bars like there was no tomorrow (which coincidently there doesn't seem to be)) again by cutting out most of the rubbish I was eating, having sensible food portions and plenty of light exercise (I've a dog and we must do about seven hours a week walking).

You don't have to worry about metabolic rates and what people ate 1000s of years ago; keep it simple, mate.  ;D

Exercise and reduced calorific intake  (plus some patient acceptance) = weight loss.  How could it not be so?

what people ate 1000s of years ago; keep it simple, mate.  ;D

Your the one who was doing that, I never mentioned any diet from 1000s of years ago, it was you.

In fact it was so ludicrous a post I thought you were on a windup, now it seems you meant it  ;D

Tosh, I dont proclaim to be an expert, I also dont go googling for results of various surveys to mention them that fit my thinking, I do know however that metabolic rate influences how well we process food and that it changes as we age and it changes according to our lifestyle.

You dragging up some survey from the past regarding soldiers isnt a true comparison by any stretch of the imagination.

OMG!............................... I cant believe Im typing this, Im not getting into one of your 'discusions'.

This thread is about losing weight.

Thanks for screwing it.

Locked.

In fact Dave St Ives can you delete it please it was a stupid idea to post this on CIU.
