last changed them just over 2 yrs ago, must be the weight of the water wearing them out fast?
my mates going to help me change them, as never done before, what make should i buy, or how much should i spend?

Whatever the cheapest your local motor factors has in????
Expensive discs are a false economy and expensive pads arent needed, its a work van,not a 400bhp Sapphire Cosworth slowing down from 140mph on a trackday lol
Even on the above mentioned, most people swear by cheapo discs and expensive/good pads like mintex 1144's etc.But thats massive overkill for a van lol
2 years aint that bad,how many miles ya done since?
-
about 20,000 i think?
-
Thats not alot, but if your WFP and have a big tank then that will indeed put more stress on your brakes and tyres. What van is it??
-
you wont go to far wrong at http://www.eurocarparts.com/ as for price its hard to say not knowing what van you have
-

think i will buy these, thanks for the advice guys, bit scared of the £10 ones on ebay

Make sure you know what pads you need. Mine is a 2000 scudo and there are two different pads in use on that model. You might need to see the pad before you make a purchase.
20K on front pads is good. I got 8k out of my last lot and apparantly they were rated for 12k. The garage could have ben lying to me though about the 12k thing.

dont be tight get to Kwik fit and get the job done proper
Kwik Fit also advertise that if they replace discs and pads once, they will do every replacement FOC for as long as you own the vehicle - or did it only apply to cars. Daughter in law has just had her second set fitted FOC on her car.

I used to think pattern parts best option as cheaper but then I thought about the mess 650 kilo's of water and tank would make of me and any passangers so I would look at genuine parts ... u may find the cost not that much more ??
-
Mintex are very good indeed.
With past motor trade exp I would recommend them for your pads and discs.
Most good motor spares shops will stock them.
If you can take your old ones off and take them with you so you can match them up. There are so many combinations especially french and italian motors!!
-
iv never rated kwik-fit. far to much money.
Local garage all the way.
My discs have worn really bad in under a year, i blame the weight i carry.
-
I wouldn't let the untrained monkeys at Kwik Fit adjust my seat.
Brake pads are easy enough, just look at how it is all together before you pull them out. When I have rebuilt engines I find taking digi pics as I go helps when putting them back together as you can easily forget where things clip together.

I agree, most novice DIYers could change front discs and pads without a problem, assuming they have the correct torx sockets to get the disc off the hub. Whilst Kwif fit may not employ the most competent fitters, even they, with the experience of repetition, would do a good job.
If Dirty Windows is going to keep his van for the next 5 years, then their offer maybe worth considering especially if its not wildly more expensive than his local garage.
We all know its a Kwik Fit marketing gimmick and most people who take them up on their offer will never come back for FOC replacements - sold car, accident writeoff, etc. so play them at their own game I say.
-
just bought them off eurocarparts under £40. pagid make, they had two types and didnt know which one i needed, so had to jack it up in the car park and look what caliper make it was, not much fun in the pouring rain. im only saving £10! ::) but then it will be in the garage for a few hours.

what van have you got mate, what year isit?
it shouldn take more than 2 hours by the slowest mechanic.
newer vans are quicker to change as some have a self bleed on them
-
Do you really need to change discs and pads every time - surely pads only most times?

What?? You dont ever need to re-bleed brakes after pad changes

its disc pads, not discs and pads.
-
on some new vans/cars, there is a piston that does it for you with one push of the pedal, apposed to several pumps..

Ooops! :-[

but to change break pads you don't need to bleed system you only need to bleed the system if you undo any break pipes and get air in there changing the pads you just push the piston back to allow the new bigger pads in
-
I was told by a garage that its best to change discs on every pad change as the new pads are harder and form a groove in the disc so a new set will be less effective and will probably drive you crazy squeeking. Got a mate to do it who is a vauxhall main dealer mechanic, he said every other pad change discs should be replaced, So he just did pads this time (on my car) and they are absolutely fine.

i only change discs if they need changing if they look ok and its not juddering on the pedal they are most likely to be fine.
i do all my own work on my vehicles it saves a fortune.
only down side i end up doing all my wifes, mums dads sisters ect too
I only bought my van in December for this new venture already I know mk6 transits inside out ive had some really bad luck and i have put another engine in it already
-
new engine and only got it last month :o Think mine is a mark 6, 55 plate?
-
yeah went and got it at 9.30 10.00 at night drove really well. time i got home after stopping for food ect it was 12.30 i had my car at my mums house so i left the van at my mums i'll pick that up tomorrow. never got round to it so i went there on the Saturday got in went to start it and no anti freeze it was frozen solid and on them they slip the teeth on the timing chain usually on the inlet cam and then valves hit and break the cam carrier and good old fords wont sell you that bit they are head matched and have to buy a new head :(
since then i have done a lot of research and that in common for those vans they also say DO NOT bump start them for that same reason
-
What do mean by bump start ? don`t understand this term.

when you get someone push the van or roll down hill in gear with clutch in then gain some speed and release clutch to start engine
-
my brakes do judder when i brake from a fast speed for a long time, say coming down a hill on a sliproad off a motorway, i thought that was the abs, am i wrong?

with abs they will judder under the foot if you break really hard or if the wheel is slipping like on ice wet mud est but you shouldn't feel anything under normal driving conditions. if the disk is warped you will feel your foot rock on the break pedal usually more noticeable at slower speeds like whilst breaking in traffic or slowly rolling down a hill with your foot only just on the break
-
just changed my pads with help from a friend, took about 1 hr. quite easy now i know how. the driver side was down to the metal, even though the sensors only been on 2 weeks. its scoured the disc. gutted about that.
the other side had about a quarter of a pad left, anyone know why?
they do feel spongy, maybe they need bedding in?

My wife's car has over 100,000 miles on it and is still on the original discs from new. On the other hand I had the front wheels off my van recently and while they were off I checked the discs and pads. The discs are quite worn after only 20,000 miles.
