Sorry if this has been asked before-
My web address www.heritageccs.co.uk is not likely to pop up when people search for 'swindon cleaning'. So if I was to buy more domains eg. www.cleaning-swindon.co.uk and the like and redirect them, would I get better results in google searches?
Or is there something else I could be doing?
Many thanks for any advice
Owen

Yes, you would get better results if the domain name has carpet cleaning and a place name in it.
-
No not if it is just redirected, you would need another website with its own hosting package. Why dont you use adwords and include swindon cleaning as a keyword and list your company on google local.
Enlan ltd own www.swindoncleaning.co.uk (http://www.swindoncleaning.co.uk) but do not show in results for "swindon cleaning" because its just a redirected domain.

Paul

Hi
all you need do is put a folder called "swindon-carpet-cleaning" after you url and put an index file inside with all other files needed and you have a new url
www.heritageccs.co.uk/swindon-carpet-cleaning
you could have go on and have
www.heritageccs.co.uk/malmesbury-carpet-cleaning
www.heritageccs.co.uk/cirencester-carpet-cleaning
and on and on

Hi Ian
And this will have just as good an effect of getting me appearing naturally (i.e. without adwords) in google searches as buying more domains?
Cheers

What about <area> cleaning services as a keyword. It's longer but I think there is good traffic generally with cleaning services.
Buy a domain and then ad pages with related services you offer.
-
What Ian has said will not be as effective as doing what I have suggested, get a new site built and submit the index page to the search engines, another tip is: if the site is pleasing to the eye and looks ok in all browsers and mobile devices they will call you ;) if it doesnt they wont!
Anyone that knows what they are doing when designing/building or advising on websites should always test a site in all browsers and mobile devices before it is uploaded. If it looks like s##t then dont listen to em :D

Most decent developers will have a device detect in their coding. This means that if it's a mobile you can send them to a cut down version of your site. This allows users on workstations to get the full benefit of there screen size, whilst presenting a usable version to the mobile user and giving them additional features available on smartphones.

???? If a sites built right in the first place and you choose a good designer it will look good in all screen resolutions including mobile browsers, 99.9% of cleaning companys are not on par with lloyds tsb or the daily telegraph so do not need a seperate site for a hand held device.

We will have to disagree on that point then.

guys
every time you add a new domain you should also but a new ip address for it. this way you can link each site to each other and have your own link exchange. ips are about £11 a year to use.
if your on the same ip you might as well go the folder road.
what interesting here is that you are all still working on SEO. For me its dead in the water. So you must be getting work from your seo listings? In my experience if i went back i would be out of business.
So whats going on?

Interesting comment, which I do not really understand. I can think of at least two really good reasons to have a separate mobile page or mobile site, regardless of how the rest of the normal site is structured. I am talking from a ranking point of view rather than purely design. Maybe that would explain the difference of opinion?

Decent sites are still ranking above Google places, especially with the latest combined results.

but dont you think thats a bit hit and miss?
for me marketing has to be controllable after all its my money and i want a return on it. I know SEO is free but it takes time when you could be doing other stuff. The hours that I have put in SEO is a waste now and I cant control google. say you spend and hour a day and in a month google changes its mind about placing some seo above the maps then its wasted.

Ian,
I take your point and yes, PPC is fairly steady overall.
We may be talking about similar stuff. I class web marketing as anything that does not involve touching the website. Most of what you are advocating fits into this category. I do not personally, see it as waste of time though.
I looked at some general CC queries in different cities today. There were three or four different layouts of the search results in different parts of the country. One was back to the original Google local stuff. This may have been due to my IP address influencing things but I suspect that Places is still in a state of flux and different things are still being tested.
In the USA, some results are being produced with the web listing and places page blended together and surprise, sirprise, those at the top seem to have the most backlinks. All interesting (but frustrating) times.

and that's just some you can get backlinks from. if you then use these to bookmark site that have say articles, videos, etc (with backlinks) then you start to see how weak just exchange really is. many used to pass on PR but most have stopped it now. but the google spider will still follow the link without the PR.

ps you will need to use excel to manage all the passwords for each site as formats are different for many sites

I agree entirely, Ian. Good post.
I do most of those (and I'm sure Wynne does as well). The trick is to not do too many at once.
I must admit, there are a couple that I have not come across. Thanks.

I can't recommend this higly enough. It's brilliant and not too expensive either for unlimited amounts of passwords! One click secure log ins.

Sorry Ian, I forgot to add this.
Roboform has a second option (caleed Roboform 2 Go) that sits on a memory stick. This can be used on any computer but once it is taken out, it erases all the passwords used (so your passwords are then wiped off that computer afterwards).
A friend of mine is using it to store passwords in a safe so no-one can break in and hack into the computers.
I could not work without it now. I was at a friend's office the other day a he ponced around for ages typing in passwords to each site we visited. It took ages.

agree about spreading them out over time. the secret is each of us has an Ip address, this is what makes it real to google and not spam. this is how google tells if an account is fake. you would not hold two or more account at one bookmarking site with the same IP
so from google point of view lots of social bookmarks all with different ip's that's social verification that your site is real and that real customers are bookmarking it. its the same as a customer writing a comment on line.

Yes it's all good stuff. There are hundreds of ways to get one way links. If I'm doing it manually however I like to go after high PR and on topic sites. All the rest can be done either automatically with software or get some monkey to do it.
