just got in from the cold fitted the new scrfewfix door mounted hose reel
i think this will change WFP as we know it , like micro bore, the L5, SLX etc
like the fogwash - i need to come up with a name for my idea - any suggestions ????
easy screws onto back doors freeing up floor space, swivels out if needed, or stays put on back door , build wise , a good bit of kit , easy as good as the normal metal reels that we have all used , one plus , its all metal so no more split spindals when the frost gets to them like we all have had in the past .
Best £33 ive ever spent for work .

this put you in the same lge as slump 3years in front of everybody else.lol :P :P
good idea i like the look of it.stand the test of time let us know.

I can now see all those supplier's with hose reels - taking them down the scrap man in the morn lol
bit like they did with that old hat 1/2 inch tricoflex years ago lol
-
here is a link for the reel

Is that bolted to the door or screwed on the ply ?
How much hose do you reckon it will hold ?
-
hey john ..how about you move it over abit and put a hole in your door .
maybe put one of them rollers if you know what iam talking about.
means you could shut the doors when when working away from van.
-
i just screwed it into the ply/metal of the door - solid as rock
ive got 60mtr's 6mm micro - easy able to swallow 100mtrs easy
-
did you read the reviews on it on the screwfix site ???

no need - i can shut door's anyway with micro the rubber door lip stops it pinching
I even pulled the hose when one door was shut and the other open , the shut one un reeled still
the hose reel cage is smooth so the hose dosnt get snagged when at a angle - unlike the other metal floor type , they have to be unwound down wind so to speak , or they can catch up - pulling the hose reel right out the van !!
-
did you read the reviews on it on the screwfix site ???
well put it this way i read them to, but upon opening box - i phoned GAV ccc told him to go and get one asap , so what iit rust's in 3 years - buy another for £ 33 lol
my other £80 ones are rusty as f..K , with no paint on them .
plus they take up space on the floor of the van .
it's nice now to open both doors and just get in the back , without stepping over reels -
anyway buy it try it take it back - screwfix good like that

Great idea jsm and presented in an original and arresting way, unfortunately it won't work long term due to the leverage on the swiveling arm. This arm will fatigue and break in transit due to the weight of water, if it was stronger, or had a brace it would fare better.
My prediction is it will bend, drooping the reel down at first, and eventually sheer. If you can find some way of offering it a bit of support when the van doors are closed it will last better. The load bearing while you are actually working is fine.
As for a name, something short and snappy, i think it should be called a john malone catherine wheel.(less snappy).
-
To be fair all the bad reviews are from users who have it mounted outside and is subject to lots of rain, and the one bad review who thought the 6mm was restricting flow will not bother anyone using 6mm microbore so it looks good to me.
-
;D ;D ;D
-
i agree average price ov
metal hose reel is 70/80 quid
i think this is cheap n a descent
alternative ;) well done johnny baby ;D ;D

nice comment slumpy - already got that covered ......... my aim was first to free up space in the back , the swivel part of the reel i am not bothered with ...... as thats why i put it on the rear door's ..... because they open in and out .... so it was my plan in testing in real life wfping to maybe get a few pipe clips to stop the frame being able to swivel ... so killing that prediction dead :P :P :P lol
new slogan ... when you cant see out !!! give jsm a shout and he'll come along and get his swivel hose reel out ... !!
-
when you got both fitted u shud
call it micro bore mayhem lol
;D ;D ;D
-
i may go the whole hog Gav and have them all down the outside of the van now ..... bit like mirror's on them silly scooter's you like ;D
-
be cool then m8
though your vans german
n my scooters r italian ;D ;D ;D ;D

john how much and what size hose have you got on it?
-
ste john's got 60metre of 6mm on the
reel , which he reckons will hold 100m
easy, cost of reel £33.00
-
ill get one soon then, need to free up some space and the reels on the floor do do your head in
-
I had two of these fixed exactly where you have them and initially they worked superbly.
They will bend at the elbow (as mentioned) and this will cause the metal at this point to split. They bounce in transit (slightly) because the hose reel is too heavy for the elbow.
I cannot remember how long I had mine but the second one was strengthened on the elbow by a corner plate welded on.
For the price they are a bargain but I would weld a corner strengthener on it now before you get a flooded van!
Rob ;D
-
good to see someone done the R & D for me ;) , like i say i will put a bracket on the frame near the hose arm to stop any flex to secure the whole reel - then just use the van door's to point the direction i need the hose reel facing - my merc van doors flip right back open so wont ever be a problem
full working test this morn , ill let me worker loose on it , if i see him swinging on it .................... he's sacked ....... ;D
-
John
One of the other problems with them is that they are general use and not up to being pulled in and out as much as window cleaners use them.
The rims on the hose reel came off on both sides, on both hose reels - easily fixed with cable ties and the winding handles got really loose, quite quickly.
I thought they were the business when I first bought them but have spent a few quid on two proper reels and I am gladly rid of them.
Good while they last but completely crap when they start getting some hammer!!!

Nice, but an enormous trip hazard. If people have sued over pole hoses, this is a no brainer.
Have you seen how James May hit his head on Topgear? The pedestrians will be like that when you pull the hose around the corner. ;D

no more of a trip hazard than any other hose reel in use !!!! ?? ??? its not a skipping rope lol anyway like most REAL window cleaner's i have full public liability insurance just in case my hose gets rapped round someone's neck .
1st day - all went well worked just as it should , saved space in the van , tho it will need the arm screwed to the back door as well as Rob said , it was slapping the door as i drove - so this fix should stop any wear over time , as it wont move , the handle issue - its a wooden rod , god forbid it gets wood worm, im sure i can pinch a plastic one off my mate gav's hose reel when he aint looking ... ;D
nuts comming undone on reel - easy fix with locktight
lol still think its the dog's goooleys - buy and try ;D
-
You could fit it in the back of van to van side, that to would save space, i like it mate, nice idea.
Reels are definatly too big and get in way!

Unless I'm mistaken with your setup, your pulling the hose straight off there right? No rollers or anything? So when you are pulling the hose it will be about waist high for a good couple of feet ie. pavement? Normal hose reels don't do that, not if you take it out and put it on the ground. ???

think you thinking too much-- lol in the 8 years i have been WFP ing i have never cut someons heads off of tripped them up lol
how long doe's it take to pull a hose our ?? - 20 seconds max - 40 if you gav lol
part of being a good window cleaner is looking before you pull out - motto to learn for monday - "" if there's people about - dont pull the hose out " then you will be fine
any hose that comes off the reel will be on the ground like a normal hose reel --- not unless you using that lighter than air water that floats in the air --- than you will need to put the cones out ;D
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
takes me 1 sec pull hose out big arms see ;D ;D

yes was thinking of trying that with the other i have - ill let you know when ive played a bit
undate - the metal arm's now fixed to the door - so no more swivel - the door is now the swivel if i need it .
-
John, just seen your address, I did all that estate when they were still building , sold that and the Anwyl estate off STasaph avenue for the first wipe, £650.
That was years ago, but I'm sorry I ever sold it now.
I canvassed most of the estate one sunday, nobody had a window cleaner, house after house was yes please. Happy days.
-
Thanks for stopping at the T bar John and letting me have a butchers at your reel. Excellent :)
Window cleaners are good problem solvers, It just takes one bright spark train of original thought and you had it. Well done ;D 8) Everyone will be wanting one now.
-
Yes Jeff, was good to see you to, i was thinking when i was driving into your town i may see you the low and behold there you was stuffing your face at the T bar lol , shame i couldnt stop longer but had to get to the Carpet Job . Glad the reel got your thumb's up :)
Dia, yes shame you dont still do the estate - come back soon lol the windy's on here now arn't that good , Ill let you fill up from my house if you want ;) the one's working it now are all on the ladder's and dont do the ones above the front porche's !! ..... i do my next door's above porch window's . So maybe you can just do a window a house ...
Also Dia, is your lad still looking for work , as may need a lad a day a week soon , text/ phone me me if so .
-
I have had one of these on my wall for the garden for around 18 months now,
and its fine for using now and then,
my mate put one in the van , and it dropped to bits in 3 months....
and swung everywhere whilst driving.
-
as said further up the post Gaz ----
mines fixed tight to the back door so it cant move at all - you now use the DOOR if you need to swivel it round .
all it now does is wind the hose in in a space saving way ;D
one thing i have noticed - its a great height to wind in , no more leaning in the van to wind in or bending down on the floor, having to lift up and put back in etc etc .
I showed Jeff today and he was quite impressed,
i'll post pic's of the mod i did to hold it to the door soon - it's simple
-
is it my but in them pictures does it show a gas bottle unsecured and above saying professional ?
Sorry to point that out, but someone has to.
Value your life, your driving round in a time bomb.
Reel idea could work if a little lower as trip hazard at that height, or do you have a clip below ?
Happy new year fella
-
lol i love this forum - the gas bottle is in there to run the propex -- and i TAKE it out when i drive of my drive in the morn ;)
quote --- Reel idea could work ???
just like to say - Reel idea WORKS first class :P ... no more a trip hazard than any other reel in use .
