Had some time today and thought I'd tweak my website.
Found a thing on Google that analyses phrases and tells
you with a graph the frequency of searches for phrases
such as upholstery cleaning etc.
Thought I'd try with some of mine like upholstery cleaning
and 3 piece suite cleaning and found that for these 2 phrases
there wasn't enough volume to create a graph.
Now try chair cleaning and sofa cleaning and what a difference.
Same with leather suite cleaning, substitute with leather sofa
cleaning and what a difference
I've kept upholstery cleaning as a key word but also sofa cleaning
and chair cleaning and injected these phrases into my site and
a few others as well. Checked my site optimisation and had gone
from 51% to 69%. That was with a Youtube video as well.
Leather 3 piece suite cleaning - leather suite cleaning...........No
Keep leather suite cleaning, it sounds professional like upholstery
cleaning, but get leather sofa cleaning as a search term and get
it into your website text.
Just my thoughts and I'm no website expert and may get shot down
in flames but it works for me.

I'm intrigued.
What is this "thing on google" that analyses keyword phrases?

now put no follow tags on all but the home page link this will focus it more. all the long tails you quotes will be sub cleaning so all are fine. what i have found is that google data does not always follow with clicks as cleaners make up a lot of the traffic.
also link into the page with these words with the same group but mix them up as having lots of the same get you marked down as it looks like spam to google.
The only problem with all this at some time you need to get local with it and this is where you will have issues as the maps and ppc will get the above the fold positions.
My advise with any keywords would be run a ppc advert and you will see in real terms what works and what does not.

this tool will give you words that link, just click on them and you get the next set. if you wrote a page on each and then link to each other with no follow tags this make your pages an authority in google eyes. i was a beta tester on a program thats aim was to build sites for customers using this system.

Putting key words and phrases in H1 and H2 tags is a good thing to do, Also use keywords and phrases as anchor text. Place keywords and phrases at the top of page then repeat at bottom of page as google remembers them better to relate to.

Google insight?
Also make sure you use the exact words in your search term.
I had carpet cleaning service as a search term but was using
carpet cleaning serviceS in my text.

I'd be careful about internal no follow. I think the algorithm changed back in late 2009

Search Engine Optimisation
I have considerable experience with web site advertising, my main business is IT, my wife is running a carpet cleaning business, hence why I am on this site. Anyway, what you describe is called keyword density.
Its very important. There are 2 aspects of advertising, pay per clikc (like google adword) and free advertiisng if the search enginge recognises your site. Each search engine provider uses a "secret" algorithium for searching your site. This takes into account many factors, one being keyword density and relevance. So yes getting this right is important, per web page you have. BUT if you over do it, the algorithium will show that you are trying to spam it! and you will go down the rankings.
For your website, you should have within the 1st 1k of text your keyword, with reasonable keyword density say 30%. The remainder of pager should have lower desnity of keyword typically 2%.
Relevant content on your site is very improtant too. Aim for at least 20 pages, if not more.
Links to external sites, and more importantly links to your site, are recognised as key factors with seearch engines (doorway pages and keyword/site rings are important, google these terms).
I will stop rattling on now, as I could go on and on...

20 plus pages on your website, that's a lot.

John,
How exactly are you using this tool (what are you trying to find out)?
Google Insights is a tools that shows movement or trends.
For example, if you look at say a buying season (say Halloween or Christmas) or a name in the news (say Wayne Rooney a few weeks ago) it will show you the change in searches for those terms. it's a way of finding out "what's hot" in what locations.
In cleaning terms for instance it may well show you that more people search for e.g. "leather cleaning Alabama" than did three months ago. If it is showing "breakout", then it's a real surge in searches.

What search words or terms people actually use when looking
for carpet/upholstery/leather cleaners or cleaning services.
I'm sure they don't type in upholstery cleaner whatever town,
or leather 3 piece suite cleaning. Some people probably couldn't even
spell suite or upholstery right.

I think you are right John.
It's more likely to be sofa clean or 3-piece etc, the sort of phrases that "normal people" use.
