Title: Facebook advertising

Does anyone do this? It seems simple to set up, just wondered if its worth it.

we do google adwords and get a steady stream of customers,  have been doing facebook ads and seem to cost a lot more and have got nothing so far  :(

I tried Facebook advertising and got nothing from it. I do have a Facebook page for the business though and got a handful of jobs through it.

I don't know if they have them in your area, but in my neck of the woods there are Facebook groups called "Buy and sell in.... (insert area here)"

I joined several of those groups and posted on them a few times a week and did get quite a few jobs that way.

Facebook advertising needs a different way of looking at things.

When you do Adwords you are getting people who are searching for something NOW!

With Facebook ads are appearing based on what YOU and Facebook THINK you MIGHT be interested in.

Boring as it may be the starting point is to sit down and think about your top 20% of customers. Ask yourslef what they all tend to enjoy doing, where they tend to live (obviously), what magazines they tend to read, cars they drive. In fact all the stuff (if you're taking any notice)  you should be doing anyway.

Also just like Adwords it's the initial data you get back that will make it profitable. Most adwords and Facebook ad managers know they will lose money in the first few days. They then use that data to hone the searches.

So yeah you guys looking for the cheap magic bullet? There ain't one.

Nearest thing is a Facebook Page and a fully optimised Google Places entry as these are no brainers. Both still require an input of time though rather than money.

One idea is to keep an eye out for local ads that pop up for you or your family. Make a note of them and give em a ring. If they are in a non competing business they may be happy to help explain how they do it and whether it's a good ROI for them.

Another trick is to do the same for adwords and look at what keywords people are using in different areas. If they do them over a few months it's almost certainly working for them. 'Carpet Cleaning <area>' is a bit unimaginative, try something slightly different.  ;)
