laptop has been stolen and all data has gone with laptop, is there any were else i could find old data ie email?
-
Go onto www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk someone on there could help you, loads of good IT guys get on there.
-

Darran
-
u mean u lost all your custy details, unless u have emailed them to yourself then no you cant
-
Ronnie, you must know who you work for on a regular basis.
Call round each one and be honest with them and then ask them to send you via e-mail the last invoice you sent them.
That way you will then have their e-mail address again for future use and also the amount you normally invoice them for and also the date of last invoice with hopefully the date that the last invoiced clean was carried out. Then you should be able to invoice them for unbilled work and any work in the future.
It isnt ideal and probably wont work for all your clients but its a start.
Im sure if youre honest with them about whats happened they'll all be very willing to help you out.

Ron you will get your data base back you just need to do a bit of leg work.
dont forget those new customers the best thing i could do is drive out follow my round and rewrite it...
so sorry to hear about this mess m8t keep your head high.

Hi Ronnie
Some decent suggestions above.
Did you never back up to disc or email?
The wcpro guys will help you i'm sure.To use wcpro on another machine you need to down load from the website, find the number it gives you and let them know so they can validate the licence.
If you are going to use this as an opportunity to upgrade kit get an apple. The mac air is out of this world, but you would need a program such as parrallels to run windows which you need for wcpro.
I'm guessing that you previously had george. How long ago and where is that data?
You will have downloadable bank statements of payments.
You may have to consider starting from scratch. That is just trying to remember customers as you drive around (as suggested having a device such as a macbook air handy) and hoping, but not really knowing that debts get paid.
Can i suggest to save constantly repeating yourself to customers you get a note- Mr Gold you are good at this type of thing- to explain the situation.
May i also suggest, when you speak to ian and brad, that in addition to back ups on sticks and emails in the future you buy another licence for another machine.(this is what i have)
-
Cant beat a note book and diary to keep you right.
-
were talking over 150k worth of work and 20k worth debt honestly i have no chance.....what a n0b i am no f.in back up aaaarrrgggghhhh
-
i use george and keep work lists for a few months before shredding, i also use an internet backup and a hard drive backup.
also emailing a backup file either to yourself or someone else like a family member might help
i know its too late for that for you, but for the future and for the other guys to have at least one method of backup.
-
ronnie can you not look at your previous invoices surely this will help identify most of your work
-

have to agree with you ronnie ,you are a numpty.
If i had a business as big as yours i would have a backup.
still im sorry to hear about your loss.
-

-
Cause it does, you backup it up on computer.

My goodness Ronnie i wish you all the best you can do it.

I use an external back up service that you can purchase from Barclays Bank. Costs about £11 a month. Data is backed up to a main server in London so if you ever lose your data you can retrieve it. It does it automatically every day so I dont evn have to think about it. Good buy!

http://www.dropbox.com/ Simple to use, FREE, and easy to recover from anywhere in the world. You can backup EVERY file connected to your business.
I feel really sorry for you Ronnie, but even my 12 year old daughter knows the importance of a back up, I struggle to understand anyone having that kind of data un-protected.
I hope you manage to recover most of your lost details, I doubt your customers will be rushing to tell you they owe you though.

What email system were you using outlook express or on-line?
Roy

Sorry to hear of your problems Ronnie.
Not much good now but for future reference I find www.humyo.com OK. Free as well. Also, I back up to an external hard drive which could easily be removed if I was going away. Not much good if burgled at other times of course but at least there is humyo to fall back on in an emergency.

ronnie. it sounds like your trail of events is similar to mine. if you fancy belling me for a chat i can run through what and how things worked on mine. there has been arrests for mine but thats all i can say on a public forum at the mo until charges have been done

found some data from feb 09 this is still missing loads and doesnt help with debts.
i found this has it was info i had sent to Ian, so some one may be able to help me.
if i send the database to ian or brad which i did about 2 months ago will this be kept on email server or anywere?
-
Start a new thread, see if you can get there attention.
-
Ronnie mate, assuming the worst and all data is lost you have to start somewhere right?
First you need to compile a list of clients as best as you can.
Your bank statements is as good a place to start as any. You will have a good idea when the job was last done, check out on your statements any payment received.
I don't know if your bank can help with names on cheques received, but you could try, they will probably charge of course.
I do log any cheques or online payments in a book that I carry with me on the round.
This helps out if there is any dispute about payment either by cheque or online.
cash payment is a difficult one, if your anything like me you will have entered these on paper, book or round card at the time of payment, but if you only record these on your laptop in the van, O.M.G.
Ron, you have been in the game long enough to know that many people will try and pull a stroke if they think they can get away with it.
You need to sit down with your staff and get your memories into gear.
If you go through the list as you do the round, try and remember if they paid or not. Some if not most payments will be remembered.
If you can't remember right now, it may well come back to you when you are next doing that job.
If your not sure, bill them for last time too, they will soon tell you if you are wrong.
You can then apologise and explain what's happened.
I have slipped up in the past through talking too much, and forgetting to mark my round card as paid or out. Next time round I ask,"did I miss you last time"? as I fumble in my pocket for the round card. If they didn't pay they usually say yes, before they are confronted with the recorded non payment.
If they say "no I paid you", you can say "so you did" as you look at your round
card, "it's the one down the road I missed".
I hope this helps mate, but your round is massive compared to mine.
Good luck mate, I see you have offered a reward, I'm sure most of us will agree, the only reward we want is to see these bastads banged up.
-
What email system were you using outlook express or on-line?
Roy
Roy i used both yahoo and windows mail.
If you sign in to yahoo mail using your pass word and user name your email should be there as they are held on their server and not on your pc.

is it not worth trying to buy the laptop if you have seen it for sale. Get a friend of family member to go buy it.
Surely it is work the few quid if you stand to loose £20k
One you may get the data back if they have not reloaded it and two you then have the evidence to the theft as well
-
central i tried this as soon as seen but they said it was sold, i even tried the other laptops that he had for sale but he said he didnt have any.
me thinks he knew i was on to him.
i would gladely pay 5 times what he was asking for it but hes obviuosly dodgey and didnt want to divulge is address
-
Have you got a web address? If so you can access your emails from another computer using your web address then forward slash/ webmail Sign in usng your password.
-
so denise i put my website address ie rcwcleaningservicesltd.co.uk/ then my password for my email login for ronnie@rcwcleaningservicesltd.co.uk???
is this correct
-
Ronnie iv had problems with police before with the wheel clamping business. What you need to do is get all the names and badge numbers from the police officers involved then ring your local police station and ask to speak to an inspector. If they dont want you to pass you through then ring 0161 872 5050 and see if you can get through that way. Once you speak to them tell them you arent happy and explain why. Tell them you are going to get intouch with the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission). This normaly works if, it doesnt then i dont know pal. Good luck mate

Maybe not quite!! But as suggested above, if you log onto your yahoo mail through the web interface rather than using a client like live mail the you may find a copy in your sent items. Other than that if you do have a web interface for your rcwcleaningservices email address and you have sent it using that you may find a copy there?
You've contacted Ian and Brad for a copy of course?
-
ye mike asked ian and brad but nothing, iv checked on the web hosting site has my ronnie@rcw was on outlook and i thought they would be saved on the server but not much there for some reason.
checked my @yahoo but didnt use has much so only had feb 2009 :o :'(

Ok, this is a long shot, but it might be the only chance you have..........
All ISP's have by law to keep a record of all your emails, web browsing etc.. for inspection by Police,Council etc..... Now you also have a right under the data acts to have a copy of what information someone holds on you. I'm not 100% on the technicalities, but i'd think your ISP could provide you with a copy of what you sent. You could try and speak to them?

well started all data i had a list of projected profits which listed customers so its not been has bad im just struggling with debts so im asking for statements from clients hoping they will be understanding.
i have to say this is going to be the most testing time in business and with the losses ill make and the vat and coperatoin bill coming up i can see a real struggle, not that i havent got the work load and the load coming in but i always find debts harder to get in jan and feb and with my business expenses draining funds i know it will be tight.......BUT i know 2-3 months and my funds will be back to normal and all this mess will be behind me.
iv aged 10 years..................

-
i never bothered before now, but ive put a password on my laptop so no one can access it, might be another thing we can all think about doing?
also why was the stolen van thread locked?
-
What a nightmare!!! Nothing constructive to add that hasn't been said already, but good luck. Hopefully your debt list will take care of itself as payments come in.
-
You are right, it doesnt work on your web rcwcleaning etc but it does work if you use www.ronberclear.co.uk/webmail
I notice you have a few web addresses. Try the one above.

Yes this will help, however a password can be removed within 15min if you know what you are doing. It is one thing you have to know when you repair computers as many people forget them.

u mean u lost all your custy details, unless u have emailed them to yourself then no you cant
I've been using an external hard drive to back up my spread sheet, about once per month, and I always print off a hard copy too. But the thing is, my external hard drive is noisy, so it's not normally plugged in, and sometimes I forget.
But this morning I e-mailed my spreadsheet to myself and it worked lovely; and it's a big document.
Thanks, BM, that was a simple but effective tip; in fact I don't know why I didn't think of it myself! ;D ;D
Ronnie, I hope you get it sorted out.

I am fortunate enough to have a family member who works with companies in data storage & protection against loss or theft. After reading about the situation you are in, i have discussed in detail some data storage & security options. As mentioned earlier, dropbox is free and syncs automatically. All contacts & email (Outlook) can be exported and backed up on dropbox (mine are on a exchange server so i have multiple copies on all devices (phone, laptop, desktop, etc), all accounts backed up daily. Alongside this another automatic backup to a external hard drive on site. Have you considered a fire on site?, so off site is a must.
Should the worse happen what about this, http://preyproject.com/ to at least try to catch the low life?
All the best with your data recovery though.
Craig
-
Really sorry to read about your situation.
It has made me reconsider my back up policy from whenever I can be bothered to at least once a week.
-
A manager of a business this size, in this situation, would be blamed and sacked.
-
sack me.........

A manager of a business this size, in this situation, would be blamed and sacked.
I think he is aware its a mistake but that is about the least helpful comment ever!

I suppose its something that we know we should do, but sometimes dont. I feel for Ronnie, its a terrible situation to be in, trying to piece things together. But you just have to do the best that you can and try and resemble things thats all. When your flying around doing different things, sometimes its not the main thing on your mind. But hope Ronnie that your getting somewhere to getting the records together. Just a blip Ronnie, things will get back on track
