Title: ideas for van security
Post by: erithwc on December 31, 2010, 12:24:55 pm
what with all the vans that are getting stolen i thought i would start this post for people to share their ideas

1, van alarm system cost around £300

2, safe for the van keys to go in when you are away on holiday or give all van keys to a family member when on holiday

3, tracking system think they cost alot of money though  ???

i think that ionics bordex purefreedom need to start looking at some kind of unique system marking so that stolen systems can be found

what about heat stamping the top of the water tank with the customers business name or system vin plate stamped into the frame

Thats a good idea for new systems.

I do have some metal punches with letters on in shed, I think I will stamp company name, phone number and postcode on mine

think if i fix a spring to the door lock lever(inside door) it will then lock the door automatically every time i shut the door

keep a spare key hidden behind the bumper as a backup case i forget to have key in my pocket

.....and then post on the net where you are going to hide the key.

Wasn't there a method using an old PAYG phone.. put in the van over night. You could track it online somehow.

ive looked at tracking systems on the net and the price is not that bad but to be honest we just dont take motor security seriously any more im guilty as well i have never had an alarm fitted to any of my newer cars as they are meant to be safer and more secure ect

perhaps we all need to take steps to make our vans/cars & keys are more secure

i think the idea of leaving all important keys with a trusted family member when you go on holiday is a good one

yes that could be done so easily some of them old nokias are so small remember the stage the smaller the phone the better?
get a car charger take it apart so instead of cigarette lighter you have live and earth and just hide it in the van anywhere with a live supply. taped in the roof lining wired to the interior light inside the vans door skin wired to door lights/switch, in rear pillar wired to rear light cluster or anywhere in engine bay

I have done this but its not very accurate, when I do a search for my van its shows my van being 4 miles away, even when its sat on my drive.

If you live in a big town that would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

one of those battery isolator keys would help, and a good old fashioned crook lock/steering lock

4 miles is ridiculous. Thanks for that info. I was going to use this but now I'll have 2nd thoughts.

What's wrong with a £30 steering wheel lock as well?

And a wheel clamp from Tesco for £30 as well...  :)

disc lock ! ( the big yellow disc which covers your steering wheel) i once saw a programme where a pro car thief tested several devices and he said " when a thief sees the big yellow disc on a vehicle chances are he will move on to a easier target as the disc takes at least 20 mins of loud bashing with a hammer to remove it" !

the car alarm, wheel clap and steering wheel disk are useless if they have broke into your house and got you motor keys because most people have the losk keys and alarm fob with the motor keys.

is their a system that can turn the car engine off if it is stolen vai satalite  ???

What about a gadget like this:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/New-GPS-GSM-Tracker-Personal-Car-Vehicle-Pet-Tracking-/290517847409?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item43a4368d71

No monthly fee,.. use a prepay sim card and only use the credit up if/when the van is missing,....

it would be such a small added cost to an expensive system to add a id tag or smart water system to them. as i said befor i have seen systems on ebay that the seller knows little about, recently there was an ionics system stripped and sold as parts. for the price of a set of punches or engraver why not mark your own up

looks good they wont get far with one of them , lot of money though.
would be cheaper to get  a length of RSJ from scrap man and concrete it in the ground . about 5 feet length  go in ground about 3 feet

have a switch put in the van (in your own secret place)
it has to be flipped before you can use the key to turn the engine on

a friend did mine cost about £10, no one can take your van even with the keys

Things are better now. If you buy an android phone you can install 'wheres my droid'. If it goes missing you can text your phone with 'track my droid' and the internal GPS in the phone will turn on and text you back its lat and long. These are much more accurate than the old nokia method.

like this idea,
something I may look into doing

the simple switch is best way so simple it gets missed by the toe rags, use original switches in the dash there is always a spare blank or disconect one you dont use, like this there is always room for another switch http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/99-02-VAUXHALL-VECTRA-1-8-DASH-SWITCH-/280581169275?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4153f0e07b

then strip ignition area find ignition wire trace it back as far as it goes so its out of plain sight, then split it add extra wires for switch then solder it back tidy it up so its not noticed then attach the other wires to switch in dash, so it acts as a on , off switch for the live wire,

on my drive i use a quality night vision camera that goes to its own separate recorder and monitor and a couple of security lights with motion sensor so you cant get any place on my drive with out getting seen, i also have another night vision camera on front of house monitoring front garden in case they try come in across that way too, i also have a third camera in back garden monitoring that way too and another security light.

£375 ruffly i just upgraded my old CCTV system a few months back you can do it cheaper maplins do a set up for £199, but when you way it up against the gear we have for work its just the price of a carbon pole, i have sticker around the house warning CCTV is in 24hr use, Ive always had CCTV for years before as there is more money in my fishing gear than my work stuff, also i have a house alarm, it makes good deterrent they see a few cameras and security lights and the beware of the dog signs soon puts them off they will sod off and look for a easier job.

most vans need the key with code chip in it  to start it,so crooks break in the house to get the key.
im thinking i should get a few new keys(with no codechip ) and scatter them around the house, with different key fobs .but only i will know the correct key fob

Bulkheads are steel plates that are fitted immediately behind the passenger and driver seats. They come in a range of styles that include half height bulk heads, solid steel, bulkheads punched with holes and bulkheads with Perspex windows that allow exterior vision through the window. Each bulkhead is specifically manufactured to fit the varying shapes and sizes of individual van makes and models.

not sure, halfords might do a battery immobilisher switch
you can get them on ebay for about £10
your less likely to use this sort of thing regular
its better than nothing

unless you have the switch in a convient place

A few ideas to prevent theft of your van. If you are going on holiday switch plug wires, disconect battery.
Fit a spot light with an infrared switch and remove bulb and in the globe socket fit a transformer with a door bell which you place inside your home, you will catch the dog in the act.
Chain front wheels together. Leave a dish with ammonia in it with a sheet of paper over it when the dog drive it will spill and the dog will choke on the fumes.
IN bad cases leave your l5 gas on and some matches in the dashboard and remover cock pit light. cheers dog. ;D ;D ;D :o :o
