Hi Lads,
Just read a reply to a question about the electric reel.Someone seems to think that a supplier- gardiners- has access to a cnc.With one of these he could make simple clutches to drive reels electrically.Would many people be interested in buying one if he did?
The idea is that you take the winding handle off a reel, replace it with a clutch and drive the reel with a suitable electric drill or other motor.The clutch would have two parts, the bit on the reel and the bit on the motor.
i would imagine they would be reasonably expensive-£50 to £80 because of the low volumes involved.
Just wondering thats all.

I'd be more interested in some non-tangling pole hose and microbore first. I don't know how you manage to reel in with electric without catching some unsuspecting limb in the process.

Pole hose is on the pole this part isn't wound in.It's the reel hose that is wound in, those of us that do this don't have a problem.
Warm hose behaves better than cold hose.

The only way I think it could work effectively would be a free-spooling clutch system or by having the ability to disengage the clutch easily for unwind.
Also a hardened keyed shaft for the hosereel spindle would ideally be required for longevity.

Slumps are you talking about the clutch that you have on your drills at the moment?

yes- or something simpler- or another design.Anything that works really.

Ok lets through a few ideas around then.
Although crude, Slumpy's system is effective and does do the job ;D
Because you have the ability of disengaging the drive motor (battery drill) to allow free-spooling unwind of the hosereel or even by slackening off the clutch you can leave the drive motor engaged and unwind.
The battery drill idea also makes use of an adjustable slipping clutch so if the hose gets snagged on rewind the motor does not take the hit and overheat.
Ideally a 12 volt powered dc motor would be preferred, can't really see a need for a speed selection option. Hand held pistol grip on/off control would be good. A hardened keyed shaft for longevity mated to a belt driven pulley system.
Still thinking of a slipping clutch mechanism though.

Alex told me he has a new CNC facility, access to injection molding too.
I still think that the way forward with the reels is look at what boat chandlery has to offer.
They have 12 volt anchor winches, and small hydraulic packs too for powering net, pot, and line haulers.

I'm happy with what i've got i just thought i'd ask the question.If not many are interested thats okay, no need for alex to even consider the request.
I've used one for about three years and i've had hot for maybe a bit longer.I see recently a lot are going hot and playing catch up.When i first went hot it seemed to meet with a lot of hostility and arguments, and the electric reel has met similar.There are a couple of other things i do that i don't even bother mentioning for this reason.
Thought i'd ask.I have asked.There were two yes votes, one of them mine.Question answered thread locked.
