Title: Winter tyres..
Post by: sherco on December 21, 2010, 01:36:29 pm
I thought i would share this with you guys....I  couldnt get out from the lane at my house in my peugeot expert  on monday due to the snow/ice...so when i finally got out i went to my local tyre supplier and had a set of winter tyres fitted to the front of my van and oh my god what a difference they make. They cost £90 each but well worth the cost...They will wear out fast in the summer so in march they will swop the tyres back for a cost of £15...I would highly recommend getting them fitted for the winter. ;D

Watch out for your insurance,i have heard that if you crash with winter tyres on the insurance company won`t pay out !

Not sure how true that is as i heard it from a friend on Face book, but would be worth checking out

Spoke to insurance company, they said as long as the tyres are the same size for the vehicle there is no problem what make you put on your vehicle, it is when you change the rims as this is classed as a modification to the vehicle, thats when you need to inform them. JUst found this.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has today reassured motorists that they will not be affected by increased car insurance premiums as a result of using winter tyres to improve their vehicle’s safety during the winter months. Following discussions with the Association of British Insurers (ABI), SMMT has clarified that the fitment of winter tyres does not constitute a modification that will affect premiums.

SMMT is recommending motorists use winter tyres to improve grip and overall stopping distances during harsh winter driving conditions and is urging drivers to seek further advice from their local franchised dealer.

“Winter tyres ensure that the driver gets maximum traction on and off road, thereby ensuring that safety and stability are optimised,” said SMMT Chief Executive, Paul Everitt. “Despite increasingly harsh winter conditions in the UK, only a handful of drivers have vehicles with winter tyres, but there are many vehicle manufacturers providing a range of winter tyre options to ensure optimum performance and driver safety during winter driving conditions.”

It is proved that winter tyres significantly improve grip and reduce stopping distances in temperatures that drop below 7?Celsius because, unlike normal driving tyres, they do not harden. This enables them to maintain better traction in low temperatures as well as in the wet and on snow, slush and ice. Tests found that stopping distances were reduced by 4.8 metres on wet roads and 11 metres on icy roads when travelling at 20mph.

whats the difference with winter tyres, is it just a thicker tread or are they actually spiked, saw some spiked tyres in Norway a few years back, they give very good grip but tear the roads up badly

I've got snow tyres and they are brilliant not 4 x 4 but I would recommend them, I'll never buy standard tyres again the cost was £13 each more.

Tried to get wnter tyres replaced on my transporter - couldnt get any anywhere ! All I could locate were some avon winter tyres but they were for 4x4 so load rating not really suitable for commercial. Phoned avon technial dept as I was concerned what insurance would say if in accident , the guy agreed not a good idea as not commercial rated.
But I certainly agree they make a big difference when fitted.
So if anyone sees any 215 65 16's winter tyres for transporter let me know.

Ive got a vw t5 174 hp with goodyear vector snow tyres all round. Its only fwd but combined with the anti wheelspin technology I have been going everywhere without getting stuck. Never going back to normal tyres. they are speed rated to 120mph but that won't be a problem in this country. Mine are 17inch. Don't know if they do 16 but maybe get a set of 17inch steel rims.

Could not believe what I saw today range rover sport doing a 360 in front of me torvill dean would have gave them 6 police 12

Has any one consider letting out some air within the legal boundaries (and if questioned they are of the run flat type) ;D

But do agree winter tyres a godsend better than running on slicks  ;D

Deflating widens the footprint and is more likely to cause wheel spin......Few of you will remember the old Ford Popular ( pre box shape ) with three speed box, maximum speed around 66 mph and very skinny tyres on ( I think ) 15" wheels.

Passed EVERYTHING in the snow including on steep hills.............why ?  because the skinny tyre created LESS resistance and cut through the snow and slush.

Deflating  tyres works on powdery sand and deep powdery snow not what you tend to come across on our roads.

A wider footprint means less wheel spin.  The only time I can think when narrow tires will help is when its turned to mush, and the tire cuts through it onto the road, but sounds like winter tyres are worth it.

I'm trading in my Golf for a new Skoda Octavia Scout Estate 4x4, only problem is there's a waiting list of 21 weeks to get one  ::)

However when I do get it, I'm getting a set of winter tyres for it ready for next winter.

I may look at winter tyres for some of the vans as well, at £90 it has to be worth looking at.

Put 4 Continental Vanco winter 2 tyres on my Sprinter this year, what a difference, it's like having 4 wheel drive! They will work better than standard tyres when the temperature is below 7deg which is from beginning November to May here!

Hi Mike

I was having huge problems with my van in the snow, got some tigar tryes not classed as winter tryes, but the design is deeper tread and the design of the tread is in blocks and they are fantastic and you can run on them all year round.

I came to Poland to spend Xmas with friend for the first time.
Over here it's illegal not to have winter tyres on.
It's impressive how they cope with the snow,
They even clear the pavements, side roads as well as the
main roads.
